Learn more about our PHMS Remote Instruction Plan

As you may know, earlier in 2025, the Wake County Public School System Board of Education modified our practices for makeup days related to school closures. As such, in alignment with state law and WCPSS Board Policy 3102, the Superintendent may—when warranted by an emergency—direct temporary remote instruction (up to five days or thirty hours). Doing so allows us the opportunity to continue learning without adding make-up days for students or extending the school year. This approach will also help reduce disruptions to family schedules, keep students connected to learning during unexpected closures, and align WCPSS with neighboring school districts in our state that use similar practices.

That being said, we want to take a moment to share some important details with our families proactively should there be a need to make use of these Remote Instruction Days due to inclement weather or other emergencies that may arise.

On days when in-person instruction is not possible due to weather or other emergencies, students will engage in learning from home using activities provided by their teachers. These remote instruction days are designed to keep students connected to school and learning in a flexible, supportive way. They are not intended to replicate a traditional school day at home. In fact, assignments and activities are intentionally planned to allow students to engage in learning in manageable chunks, take breaks as needed, and balance schoolwork with rest and family responsibilities they may have.

As such, no new instructional content will be taught and no live (synchronous) instruction will be required or expected. While some teachers may choose to offer optional virtual office hours to support students with questions related to assignments or activities, participation in these sessions will be completely optional. Instead, should there be a need to pivot to a remote instruction day, the expectation of students will be simple:

  1. They should log in to their WCPSS student email to review any schoolwide updates.

  2. They should then log in to Canvas to access work that their teachers have assigned to them. All teachers will be expected to clearly label and identify Remote Instruction Lessons on their Canvas homepage for quick and easy access.

  3. They should then complete and submit all assignments within three (3) school days of returning to in-person instruction to be counted present for the Remote Instruction Days. Students who do not complete and submit work within the three-day window will be marked absent for the Remote Instruction Day.

We hope that this information is helpful as we attempt to prepare proactively for any upcoming Remote Instruction Days in our future. If you have any questions, please let us know.
