Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Services 

The Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) program provides a rewarding experience for students who perform or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience or environment. AIG students receive specific education services beyond those ordinarily provided by the traditional educational program.

With AIG, outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata and in all areas of human endeavor. We aim to identify students from every walk of life who qualify for AIG services. 4TH AND 5TH IDENTIFIED STUDENTS

Resource services are provided for 4th and 5th grade identified students at least once a week per identified area.

3RD GRADE AIG IDENTIFICATION

3rd Grade is the AIG testing year. All students will be tested in November with the CogAT and then again in December with the IOWA if any subtests scores on the CogAT are 85% or higher. These scores are used in addition to work evidence through classroom learning and Fall Explorers/Enrichment classes to determine a need for gifted identification

TALENT DEVELOPMENT

Students referred for further evaluation by the SBC-GE will either be identified as AIG or they may be identified for the Talent Development Program.

4th AND 5TH GRADE Talent Development (TD) students will be served with the identified AIG students. A student can be placed in Talent Development in either reading and/or math depending on the student’s strengths as indicated through the data discussion.

K-2 Math & Reading Enrichment

Students in K-2 will be invited to work in pull out resource classes based on data from formative & summative assessments. Parents will be notified if their child is selected to join these enrichment groups.

3rd Grade Explorers Program: (First Semester)

The purpose of the Wake County Public School Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program is to provide an appropriately challenging educational program for students who perform, or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment.

The Wake County AIG Program supports a unique nurturing component, 3rd Grade Explorers. In the first part of the school year, the AIG teacher works with whole-class groups in third grade. Students who demonstrate high performance while working with their classroom teachers and/or the AIG teacher will then participate in small enrichment groups called 3rd Grade Explorers. Some students may participate in one or more small group experiences, while other students may not demonstrate a need for this enrichment. Participation in a small group experience does not mean that the student has been, or will be, identified for future AIG services.

3rd Grade Testing:

All third grade students are administered the CogAT Assessment in November. If the composite or subtest score on the CogAT is at or above the 85th percentile then students will be eligible to take the IOWA Assessment in December.

3rd Grade AIG Program: (Second Semester)

After taking the Iowa Assessment, students who score at or above the 95th percentile on the CogAT and Iowa will be considered for referral to the School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE). The SBCGE will proceed in determining if the student should be identified. The assessment scores are used in addition to regular classroom work samples and Fall Explorers participation to determine a need for AIG identification.

4th and 5th Grade AIG Program:

Based on the county Board approved AIG Plan, The School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) refers a nominated student for evaluation and uses several factors to determine eligibility for differentiated services through our AIG program. Students are identified as AIG (Academically and Intellectually Gifted), AG (Academically Gifted) or IG (Intellectually Gifted) in reading and/or math.

AIG teachers meet with identified students at least once a week per identified area. Students will also have differentiated education within their regular classroom.

Talent Development:

Talent Development (TD) students are defined as being high performing students that show the potential for AIG identification and/or that have high performing characteristics. Using district guidelines, the SBCGE will use databased problem solving to make placement decisions and serve them with identified students. A student can be placed in TD in either reading and/or math depending on the student's strengths as indicated through the data discussion. WCPSS AIG Family Brochure

Nominations:

Nominations for 4th and 5th Grade students, who are not already identified AIG, are accepted all during the school year. All nominations are reviewed by the School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) who will determine which students to refer for testing. Testing only takes place twice a school year....fall and spring.

Nominated students should have a history and current academic performance and behavioral patterns which support the need for enrichment services. The academic performance and behavioral patterns can be determined by looking at informal data, such as parent checklists, teacher checklists, and student portfolios which include Level 4 work samples and formal indicators such as the following standardized tests: CogAT, IOWA, and EOG's and private testing.

In order to be considered for Fall Testing your student will need to be nominated by the first week in October. In order to be considered for Spring Testing your student will need to be nominated by the first week of January.
