Lincoln Heights Environmental Connections Magnet Program

  • nature quote

Nature is an open-ended laboratory where children can collaborate, communicate, create, and think cirtically to make hypotheses and solve problems. In fact, research conducted by the Children & Nature Network, the Natural Start Alliance, and experts like Last Child in the Woods author Richard Louv shows that outdoor experiences lead to improved intellectual, emotional, social, and physical health.

    Nature-Based Learning

Offering daily instruction across all content areas delivered through the lens of environmental and life sciences, Lincoln Heights Magnet Elementary School's program delivers authentic, hands-on opportunities to investigate and connect with life outside the school walls.

At Lincoln Heights Environmental Connections Magnet students will:

    • Become environmentally literate citizens
    • Understand how natural systems and human social systems work and interrelate
    • Practice personal and civic responsibility
    • Take classes in Outdoor Learning Laboratories on the school's grounds
    • Engage in project-based learning through Environmental Challenge Inquiry Units (E-Inquiry)
    • Participate daily in multi-age, multi-disciplinary Expeditions (electives) of student's choosing

Our students have access to a host of environmental and scientific equipment and technologies including microscopes, temperature and pressure sensors, indoor tower gardens, outdoor trail cameras, spotting scopes, telescopes, weather instruments, and more.

    Strong School Partnerships

Partnerships with N.C. State University's Colleges of Education, Natural Resources and Agriculture & Life Sciences, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality/Environmental Education, and North Carolina Project Learning Tree serve to enhance the school's Environmental Connections magnet theme and support the specialized curriculum offerings.
