Gifted and Talented/AIG Basics (K-5)
Our Magnet Theme at Hunter is GT (Gifted & Talented)/AIG (Academically Intellectually Gifted) Basics. At Hunter, we truly believe that all students have gifts and talents, and our goal is to nurture these gifts throughout the school day in a variety of ways. There are no qualifications for a student to get into Hunter. One of the ways we nurture the gifts and talents of ALL students is through our extensive elective program. Offerings include areas of the performing arts (dance, theater, orchestra, band, chorus), visual arts, PE, STEAM, and core electives.Through an innovative schedule that incorporates two electives per day for students in grades one through five and one elective per day for kindergartners, we seek to celebrate the global diversity of our student body and to discover and nurture the gifts & talents of every student. Our goal is to identify the academic and creative passions of our students and to provide unique learning experiences which develop, enrich, and extend those interests via over 250 elective offerings each year! Although some elective courses are year- or semester-long, most last for one academic quarter, allowing students to experience up to eight different electives per academic year.Sampling of Elective offerings:Students in the AIG (Academically and Intellectually Gifted) Basics theme are cluster grouped with other AIG-identified students for language arts or math, according to their individual qualifications. This theme is combined with the Gifted and Talented theme, so ALL students are offered elective choices. This theme is often abbreviated as GT/AIG.Advanced learners in early grades are provided with enrichment opportunities through push-in and pull-out instruction in grades K-2. In addition, we offer a broad array of AG elective courses for students at all grade levels, and we provide content differentiation in core instruction at all grade levels through technology applications, curriculum acceleration, and enrichment.
Parents and students comment on the AIG Program:
"At my base school, there were only a few AIG students in my class, but at Hunter, I had so many AIG students. They really get the way I learn and help challenge me." Hunter Student
"I am amazed at what these kids get to learn day in and day out. Teachers really nurture the gifts and talents of every kid! With over 250 electives in the performing and visual arts, PE and the core subjects, it has allowed them to take electives like orchestra, chess, theater production, kitchen chemistry, parkour, coding, and book club!"
