The K-2 academically gifted program provides Primary Education Thinking Skills (PETS)program to all Kindergarten, First and Second graders in order to build students’ critical and creative thinking skills. The intention is to develop convergent, divergent, visual/spatial, and evaluative thinking ability in all students in these grades while providing opportunities for students with exceptional potential to be challenged in preparation for later gifted identification and services.

 

In third grade, all students participate in Explorers. The AIG resource teacher works in partnership with the third grade teachers to provide a variety of in-class experiences designed to elicit high academic performance. Students who demonstrate potential in these activities will receive extension activities in mathematics and language arts under the guidance of the AIG resource teacher.

 

Services for AIG identified fourth and fifth grade students include daily differentiation within the general education setting. Appropriate options, such as curriculum compacting and a variety of extension activities, match individual student needs for differentiation. 

 

 

 

Your child will be assessed on a routine basis and taught according to his/her ability level. Within the classroom, all students learn the grade level curriculum and are flexibly grouped in cluster/small groups to enhance reading and math instruction. This differentiated instruction allows your child to master concepts and continually be challenged, whatever his/her level of development. Although the state does not formally identify gifted students until 4th grade, we use assessment data and professional knowledge to accelerate students and provide enrichment classes with highly trained and/or certified AIG teachers as early as kindergarten. AIG Electives are available K-5.
