Academically Gifted Program

  •
    • The Academically and Intellectually Gifted Program provides a challenging educational program for students who are identified as performing or show potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment in reading and/or math. Academically and intellectually gifted students receive differentiated education services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program as outlined by NC General Statute Article 9B. These classes are often referred to as AIG. Instruction focuses on problem solving, self-directed learning, effective oral and written communication, individual investigations, and self-analysis of strengths, needs, and academic potential, which correlates with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
The AIG Program also provides ongoing support and guidance for K–8 teachers and staff in incorporating appropriate instructional strategies and differentiation to maximize student growth.  The goal for gifted education is to provide opportunities for the fullest development of each learner's potential.
Housed under, but separate from AIG are accelerative practices, such as Single Subject Acceleration (SSA). Students meeting qualifying criteria in grades K-7 can take advanced academic content in mathematics or English Language Arts through Single Subject Acceleration (SSA). This ensures opportunities for appropriate levels of academic challenge. Only students who are currently enrolled and attending a WCPSS school during the open nomination and testing window are eligible to be considered for SSA. To learn more about this program, or to register your child for testing during the open window for your track, visit the WCPSS SSA Information Website.
To find out more about the WCPSS AIG program, please go to the WCPSS Academically & Intellectually Gifted Program website.

    Nominations

In WCPSS, students are nominated by parents and/or teachers to be reviewed by the Leesville School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) to determine if the student needs differentiation beyond the regular classroom.  Nominations can be made at any time.  However, for our 4th and 5th grade students, there are two windows in which nominations are made that fall within the deadlines for testing.  Please see the dates below.

The nomination google form is located on Mrs. Guza's website.  Nominations will be reviewed by the School Based Committee for Gifted Education along with multiple pertinent points of data to decide if testing will be appropriate for the child.  Please email Kim Guza (kguza2@wcpss.net) for any questions about this process or if you have any issues with accessing the form.

    • Third Grade
All 3rd grade students will all take the CogAt screening test.  This is one of the many points used to determine need of services.  More information about third grade specifically and the third grade Explorers program can be found on the AIG website and will be shared at the 3rd grade Explorers Presentation Meeting towards the end of September.  Specifics will be shared through your classroom teacher's Talking Points.
