• READING (Literature; Informational Text)
Students are expected to demonstrate their mastery of standards both verbally and in writing. Students need to read a diverse selection of high-quality, increasingly complex literary and informational texts. A key aspect of the Reading Standards is ensuring that all students can comprehend progressively challenging texts throughout their education. Additionally, students should develop the habit of close, independent reading for extended periods and connect their prior knowledge and experiences to the text. Over time, they should build the ability to gain deeper understanding and make more effective use of the text.

    WRITING
Students should learn to present and support opinions or arguments, show understanding of a topic, and narrate real or imagined experiences. Writing should communicate ideas clearly and effectively. The Writing Standards highlight the importance of regular writing practice to build knowledge and demonstrate understanding. The writing process—from prewriting to editing—is clearly outlined in the standards, detailing what students should know and accomplish by the end of each grade.

    SPEAKING AND LISTENING
Listening Standards describe the skills students should master by the end of each grade. Teachers give students frequent opportunities to express their thoughts in structured conversations, whether in whole groups, small groups, or pairs. For effective participation, students should be able to share accurate information, respond to others’ ideas, use data and evidence, and listen attentively.

    LANGUAGE
Language skills are essential to reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It is crucial for students to apply accurate language skills in all contexts. The Language Standards emphasize using correct language skills, not just recognizing them.  Students should demonstrate proficiency in language skills starting in the lower grades and achieve proficiency in these skills by the end of their middle school career.
