Davis Drive Elementary Transportation Updates for 2025-2026 School Year
Transportation Update (email sent 1/16/2026)
Dear Families,
I am writing to share the results of a recent observation and evaluation of our morning carpool procedures. This review was conducted in response to multiple concerns regarding carpool duration and pedestrian safety.
The observation was conducted by representatives from the Town of Cary Police Department, WCPSS Security, and a WCPSS Senior Site Planner from Facilities Design and Construction. We also conducted a carpool audit and found that on a good-weather morning in January, approximately 300+ cars participated in morning carpool. Please note that this number increases on inclement weather days.
Key outcomes from the observation are:
Parents must be reminded that students should only be dropped off in designated drop-off areas. Dropping students off in the roadway (Collins Rd/Davis Drive) or other non-designated locations is not permitted.
Conduct crosswalk safety training for all DDE students.
Conduct carpool safety training for appropriate staff.
The current carpool operation is running as efficiently as possible. Returning to the previous procedure (last year) is not recommended, as it created additional safety concerns and caused delays for buses exiting onto Davis Drive. It is critical that WCPSS Transportation operations run as efficiently as possible.
Without major roadway changes by the Town or the Department of Transportation, the school is unable to further influence traffic conditions on surrounding roads. While the school manages on-campus procedures, it cannot control individual adult behavior on town or state roadways.
Walkers and bikers should be grouped at staff-held stop sign posts (at crosswalks on campus) and crossed during natural breaks in traffic. These stop signs function similarly to pedestrian signals at traffic lights (i.e., “walk” and “don’t walk”) and are intended to ensure both pedestrian safety and efficient traffic flow on campus.
Make sure assigned staff at crosswalks position themselves between vehicles and pedestrians while they are crossing.
Please remember the following state laws when traveling on town or state roads:
Where traffic control signals are not in place, drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians crossing within a marked crosswalk.
When a vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk to allow a pedestrian to cross, drivers approaching from behind may not overtake or pass the stopped vehicle.
Any student traveling to or from school on foot/bike/scooter is considered a walker. Families must complete a Walker Permission Form for these students. Kindergarten and first-grade students who do not walk with an older sibling must be escorted to one of the two designated campus entrances by a parent or your designated adult.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support as we work together to ensure the safety of all students while maintaining efficient school operations.
Sincerely,
Barb Fair
