Ms. Joyce Ratley, Assistant Principal
I am excited about being the Assistant Principal at Washington GT Magnet Elementary School! I am passionate about students being supported by a staff who cares. The first time I visited Washington, it was evident that it was a learning community where students were excited about learning, supported by a staff that was committed to their success through strong personal connections.
My early educational years taught me tough lessons and helped to build character. Teachers and students at times teased without knowing the result. Later, I had several teachers who demonstrated the importance of respecting others and their backgrounds. This informed my desire to be an educator who advocates for all students.
I began my professional career in banking but felt called after a broad range of experiences working with young people to enter the teaching profession. I joined the newly opened Green Hope High School in Cary and taught in a self-contained classroom for students with special needs for several years. In 2018, I left the classroom to pursue a Masters in School Administration. During that time, I interned as an Assistant Principal at Carpenter Elementary. I was able to learn and grow in a school that presented challenges and opportunities to work collaboratively and provide beneficial support. I know this experience prepared me for my Assistant Principal position. I feel strongly about young students being nurtured and challenged to reach their full potential.
When I’m at home, I love to read and journal. I enjoy traveling, cruising, and spending time with family and friends. I have one daughter, Yrome, who lives in St. Louis.
I look forward to partnering with you and the Washington staff as we continue to create relationships that foster student success!
