Articulated Credit for CTE Classes and Credentials
-
What is articulated credit?
Articulated credit allows students to meet college graduation requirements by applying prior learning—such as high school Career and Technical Education coursework or earned credentials—toward North Carolina community college courses. Eligible students can earn community college credit, reducing duplication of coursework and accelerating their pathway. Students may qualify through the Statewide Articulation Agreement, the Wake County Public School System Local Articulation Agreement, or approved credentials listed under Wake Tech’s Credit for Prior Learning. (See Wake Tech’s full approved list for details.)
Please note that only a limited number of courses and industry credentials typically transfer to four-year institutions. Students are encouraged to consult with their intended college or university to confirm transferability.
To earn articulated credit for eligible CTE courses, students must follow one of the options:
Option 1: Course-Based Articulation
- Earn a grade of B or higher in the CTE course, and
- Earn a scaled score of A on the CTE post-assessment (NCDPI or approved third party) or meet the Performance-Based Measure (PBM), and
- Enroll at Wake Tech or another NC community college within two years of high school graduation.
OR
Option 2: Credential-Based Credit
- Earn an industry-recognized credential included on Wake Tech’s Prior Learning Assessment list, and
- Enroll at Wake Tech or another NC community college within two years of high school graduation.
What are the steps for getting articulated credit at Wake Tech Community College?
Students should:
- Visit Wake Tech's Credit for Prior Learning Website and explore the eligible credentials and courses under the High School Articulation Agreements header. There's a statewide agreement and an agreement specific to Wake County Public Schools.
- Apply for admission to Wake Tech and declare your intended program of study. If you have completed any dual enrollment coursework through CCP, you are already a Wake Tech student and may not need to reapply. You can check with the Admissions Office (admissions@waketech.edu) to see whether a new application is necessary.
- Submit your official high school transcript to Wake Tech's Admissions Office.
- Email tranevalreq@waketech.edu to request credit approved by a high school articulation agreement. This email should include:
- Your full name
- Wake Tech ID number
- For Courses:
- High school course name(s)
- Grade earned in the course(s)
- Score(s) on the CTE post assessment or the Performance-Based Measure (PBM)
- This could be a report card, an Infinite Campus printout, or another form of documentation. See your teacher or Ms. O’Brien for assistance if you are unsure.
- For Credentials:
- Credential name(s)
- Proof of credential(s)
- After the student has submitted this information, a member of Wake Tech’s transcript evaluation team will review this information to ensure that all criteria have been met. If all criteria have been met, they will award appropriate credit.
All North Carolina community colleges accept articulated credit for eligible CTE courses at Apex High School. Please see Ms. O’Brien for assistance with other community colleges.
