Weekly Message for 12-8-24
Posted by Justin Carrington on 12/8/2024Winter Sports Kickoff This Week with Two Home Games
This week marks the start of the winter sports season with our first home basketball games against Apex on Monday (12/9) and Leesville Road on Thursday (12/12). We hope to see you there as we try to pack the stands! The games will start at 4:00 pm and will conclude around 6:00-6:15 pm, at which point all students should be picked up. Students who are not picked up promptly after events may have their privileges to attend future events (e.g., sporting events, dances, etc.) revoked.
Holiday Gift Card Drive
We are continuing our PHMS tradition of giving to families who could benefit from our Holiday Gift Card Drive. This initiative seeks gift card donations in increments of $5 or more to local grocery and/or retail stores in our area that can be provided to families in need of assistance during the holiday season. If a community member wishes to provide a donation, then we respectfully ask that gift cards be dropped off with our PHMS front office team. Once collected, gift cards will be dispersed equitably to PHMS families that will benefit.
Last school year we were able to provide assistance to 25+ families. We ask that all donations be dropped off to our main office team by Wednesday, December 18th, so we can distribute them before the Holiday Break. If you have any questions and/or could benefit from Holiday assistance, then please contact your grade level counselor:
-
6th Grade: Mr. Martin (jwmartin@wcpss.net)
-
7th Grade: Mr. Brown (gbrown5@wcpss.net)

Weekly Message for 11-24-24
Posted by Justin Carrington on 11/24/2024Thanksgiving Message from Dr. Carrington
As many prepare to gather during Thanksgiving this week, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to our incredible PHMS community. Over the course of the past 18 months, I have had the unique privilege of serving this community, and I could not do it without the dedicated and supportive individuals who make up our school community—the students, the staff, the families, all of whom make our school community so special. Wishing you all a joyful and peaceful Thanksgiving filled with love and gratitude!
Spirit Week, Pep Rally, and Fall Dance Recap
Last Friday capped off a fun-filled week at PHMS with our fall pep rally and dance. As you may know, we made a slight change to the dance based on feedback from students who really wanted a later dance time, and it was seemingly a big hit as we had a packed house with over 400 students attending the dance. Our next dance will take place on Friday, February 28, 2025. A special thank you to our PTSA Dance Committee for all of their work to coordinate this along with the parents/guardians who assisted with the dance.
School Closed Beginning Wednesday (11/27)
This is a short week for staff and students due to the Thanksgiving holiday. As a reminder, school will be in session on Monday (11/25) and Tuesday (11/26).
Last Couple of Days of the American Heart Challenge!
Our health/PE classes will once again be participating in the American Heart Challenge, an annual fundraiser in conjunction with the American Heart Association that raises awareness and funds for congenital heart defects, nutrition security, CPR training, mental well-being and more as we work to end heart disease and stroke. Doing so also helps our PE department earn money for equipment and students can also earn gifts for their participation. For more information, be sure to view the event flier. The last day to contribute is November 26. To get started:
-
Download the free AHA Schools App or register online at heart.org/schools.
-
Send texts or emails to friends and family to ask for donations.
-
Complete Finn’s Mission to know the lifesaving skill of Hands-Only CPR® and the warning signs of stroke.

Student Engagement Survey in November
Around the middle of November, we will be administering the WCPSS Student Engagement Survey to our students. This survey provides great information to us as a school to identify strengths and areas for improvement as a school.
For example, the survey asks students about things like whether they feel that adults in our school treat students fairly, whether tests in their classes do a good job of measuring what they're able to do, whether they feel like they have a say in what happens at school, and more. To see the survey in full, parents can access the questions on the survey through these documents (in English) and (in Spanish).

Weekly Message for 11-3-24
Posted by Justin Carrington on 11/3/2024Another Successful Campus Spruce Up Day!
Thanks so much to the students and parents/guardians who came out this Saturday (11/2) to assist with spreading mulch across our campus. We were able to make a lot of great strides but still feel like we might need one more day to wrap up. Right now, we are looking at November 16 or November 23 as a potential next day to finish up some loose ends.
We will send out additional details by the middle of this week once we confirm the date. We could use all the shovels and wheelbarrows that we can get our hands on, so even if you’re unable to attend and you have supplies that you wouldn’t mind letting us use, that would be a great help to finish everything quicker. Once again, additional details and a sign-up will be shared soon.

Posted by Justin Carrington on 10/27/2024Costumes on Thursday, October 31
Students who wish to wear costumes on Halloween (Thursday, October 31) are permitted to do so. As is the case with any other day, however, student attire must adhere to the WCPSS Dress Code Policy as adopted by our school.
Furthermore, students must adhere to all other policies outlined in the Student Code of Conduct when considering what they may (or may not) wear as a part of a costume (or any attire for that matter). Below are a few things to remember:

Full face coverings/masks are NOT permitted.
-
Facsimiles of any weapons (e.g., toy weapons, plastic axes for costume prop, etc.) or other potentially dangerous instruments are NOT permitted.

Anything that promotes use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs OR anything that depicts profanity, vulgarity, obscenity, or violence are NOT permitted
Again, to reiterate the earlier point—if students wouldn’t be able to wear something to school any other day of the year, they would not be permitted to wear it as a costume.

We invite everyone within our PHMS community to join schools and organizations across the nation in wearing orange on Wednesday (10/16) for Unity Day. As a school community, let us unite around kindness, support, and inclusion.
School Record for Number of Students Selected for North Carolina Middle School Honors Chorus
Each year, approximately 10-20 PHMS students audition for the North Carolina Middle School Chorus. Schools that are lucky will often have a couple students end up making it to the Honors Chorus. This year, we hit a school record with 8 students from PHMS making the NC Middle School Honors Chorus. Next month, these students will participate in the 2024 NC Middle School Honors Chorus Clinic, where they will sing in a chorus made up of approximately 150 of the best middle school singers in the state. Congratulations to these students and our chorus director Ms. Ellie Cain.
Mark Your Calendar for Our Next Campus Spruce Up Day on Saturday, November 2
Do you want to help us continue our campus beautification and revitalization efforts? If so, please consider joining us on Saturday, November 2 as we will be spreading mulch around our campus and possibly adding some different plants and flowers to the front entrance. We would love to get at least 30-40 volunteers to assist with this project, so if you have a couple of hours to assist with this, please put this on your calendar. We will solidify the times for this event this week; however, it will likely start around 9:00 am and end before noon.
