• Alston Ridge Middle School Grading Policy

    Grading Philosophy

Students are responsible for using their classes' Canvas course, PowerSchool and/or communicating with teachers to identify missed/missing assignments. Students are expected to complete assignments on or before the due date. All students should be prepared to complete/pass all major tests at the first attempt to obtain full credit. RIDGE time should be utilized wisely for additional academic support. Teachers will update grades weekly in PowerSchool.

    Grade Calculations

A student’s grade will be calculated using a percentage system divided between two categories.  Majors will include tests, projects, select labs and other summative assessments. Minors will include classwork, quizzes and other formative assessments. Majors will count for 60% and Minors 40% of the student's total grade.

    Grading Scale

    A: 90 - 100

    B: 80 - 89

    C: 70 - 79

    D: 60 - 69

    F: 59 and Below

    Late Work

Teachers will enter "Missing" or "NHI" (Not Handed In) in the gradebook to indicate missing assignments. For Minor assignments, students will have the opportunity to submit missing work within 1 school day. For Major assignments, students will have the opportunity to submit missing work within 5 school days. Other considerations will be made for missing assignments on a case-by-case basis. Note: Late submissions will not be accepted after the end of the respective unit.

    Absent Make-Up Work

For any new work assigned during an absence, students will have a maximum of 2 days for each day absent to complete the assignments. Assignments given before an absence are expected to be turned in by the due date or first day of return. Special consideration will be given in cases of extended absences.

Virtual learning is not an option for extended absences.

Coursework will be available after any extended absence.

    Point Recovery

Point recovery is offered only for Major assessments. Students who score below 70% on an assessment are eligible for point recovery. Points can be recovered up to a grade of 70%(C). This opportunity is available one time per assessment. Students may be asked to complete a study guide and attend a review session or other activity to be eligible for point recovery.
