Art
In their art special, students explore principles and techniques of creative expression using a variety of media and tools. In Kindergarten, students are introduced to principles of art and make initial attempts to emulate the work of specific artists, such as the impressionist style of Monet. First grade explores the theme of families as they explore different media and further develop the coordination required to manipulate different artist's tools as demonstrated in their sculpted bird and cage project. Second grade examines community features through an artistic lens with projects such as the woven alligator project that aligns with the grade's field trip to the North Carolina Zoo. In third grade, students engage in a survey of art history ranging from prehistoric cave drawings to twentieth century art forms. Fourth grade focuses on North Carolina art including the study and creation of iconic Outer Banks lighthouse landscapes. Fifth graders exercise their artistic skills and delve deeper into artistic theory with their legacy art project and projects such as tessalations that align with their math curriculum. -
