  •  Leesville Road High School Game Design Academy

The Game Design Academy (GDA) is an immersive, smaller learning community within Leesville Road High School. GDA focuses on developing skills in technology, design, problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and Adobe software applications. This program is a four-year course of study where students take core and technical classes together as a cohort. Students should have some interest in computers but do not need the desire to enter a career in game design.

The GDA prepares students for the many diverse career opportunities in today’s growing technology and computer fields. Students are equipped with personal, analytical, technical, teamwork, communication, and soft skills necessary to be successful in college and today’s workforce. GDA students are provided with unique learning experiences that allow them access to industry-specific curricula, work-based learning experiences, and relationships with business professionals.

The learning environment is collaborative and fun. All students will be supported to ensure academic success as they progress through the four-year academy in grade-level cohorts. Project-based learning, interdisciplinary projects, and STEM principles are integrated across technical and core courses. Academy students participate in presentations, communication, team building, resume writing, mock interviews, networking events, and other activities to prepare them for success after high school.  The GDA has partnered with local businesses to offer apprenticeships, internships, and job shadowing opportunities.

  • What is a Career Academy?

Career academies are smaller, personalized, learning communities that focus on a career theme and are integrated into students’ studies, including their core curriculum courses.

Academy classes are usually blocked back-to-back in the daily schedule, and students attend them as a group (cohort). Students can complete academy requirements within the regular school day, except for their internship. The Game Design Academy is open to rising Freshmen, who will attend Leesville Road High School and have applied to be a member of the academy.

Students agree to commit to the Career Academy for their academic career at Leesville Road High School. This commitment will culminate in an internship during the student's senior year at a local business to see how all of their studies apply in a “real world” situation.

In compliance with federal law, Wake County Public School System administers all education programs, employment activities, and admissions without discrimination against any person on the basis of gender, race, color, religion, national origin, age, or disability.
