Sam Woodrum

Guidance Counselor

Hi! I’m Sam Woodrum, and I love being a school counselor at A. B. Combs, where my biggest job is to “seek first to understand, then to be understood” (Habit 5).  I grew up in Angier, NC but Raleigh has been my home since 2010.  I received a BA degree from Gardner-Webb University and a Masters of Education in School Counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill.  As a counselor, some of my biggest influences are... strengths focused and solution focused approaches; storytelling (narrative therapy); summer camp (I believe school can be a place for adventure/challenges/connection too); and the brave, caring, and creative kids in our school.  I became a National Board Certified School Counselor by the NBPTS in 2022.

I have a wife and daughter (born in 2021) that make my home a wonderful place to be along with our cat and an oversized supply of hot chocolate and board games.  However, we also like to go outside plenty to play, see or eat new things, and visit the rest of our family.   My other favorite ways to sharpen the saw (Habit 7) are: mountain biking, training for trail triathlons, listening to audiobooks, surfing, and playing the drums.  My favorite foods are taqueria tacos, sweet potatoes, collard greens, and pesto.  My favorite dinosaur is a triceratops, obviously.
