Fall Field Trips are HERE!
Field trips are an exciting learning experience for students and we look forward to several field trips in November. Some field trip reminders for families:
- Field Trips are direct curriculum connected and approved by the FWES School based trip committee
- Chaperones- only approved volunteers can serve as a chaperone on a field trip
- Teachers/Teams will have limits of chaperones who can attend and families will need to sign up with teachers AHEAD of the trip
- Chaperones will be given responsibilities to help supervise students- not just attend for and with their own child
- *Sometimes organizations require admission fees for chaperones, too. Chaperones will be responsible for their own admission payments when required.
- Chaperones are not allowed to use transportation vehicles used for field trips due to liability and must transport themselves to and from the field trip location
- Siblings (younger or older) are not allowed to attend the field trip with the chaperone so that the chaperone can fully participate in the role of supervising school students on the trip
- Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately and arrives to school on time to fully participate in their field trip experience

Please click on the link below to see examples from FWES staff and fellow FWES families. If adding a slide, please make a copy of slide 2 and add your details. Thank you for your service and Happy Veteran’s Day!
FWES Honors Veterans in our School Community 2024
If you have questions, please reach out to Mrs. Naftel at snaftel@wcpss.net. Please complete by November 6th.
Action Wednesdays - FWES Takes Action- what can you share? As an IB school one of our missions is to make the world a better place by taking action. We encourage all students and families to take small, medium or large actions to do just that- in school and outside of the school day. Please review our Action slide deck that includes the 100s of action projects students and families have completed over the last 3 years.
What might your child and your family do to take action? We are hoping this slide deck will give you some ideas of what action might look like and you can support your student’s desire to take action outside of the school day.
If you take action- be sure to share it here: Report FWES Action and each week on Wednesday’s news broadcasts, actions taken and added to the slide deck are shared with the whole school community. We would love to highlight how the entire FWES community is taking action to make the world a better place!
*This reporting form is also linked on the homepage of our website in the image below- you can access it at any time!

Fundraiser alert! We wish we didn’t have to ask for money, but it’s how we pay for all the work we do. FWES PTA limits our student fundraising to two events a year, both in the fall. GoPlaySave fundraiser kicks off this Friday, and will run until September 27. Your child will bring home a GoPlaySave envelope, instructions on setup, and a coupon book on Friday. You can purchase the physical book, a mobile book, or a bundle of both. For every purchase of a mobile book, you will also get the previous year's mobile book for free. There's over $12,000 worth of coupons in this book, and you need only use 2 or 3 coupons to cover the cost of the book. 50% of every sale goes back to the school! So sell away, save money, earn prizes on the way, and support FWES!
Join us Tuesday September 17 at 6pm for a membership meeting and parent social. Meet your PTA officers and vote on our budget. Socialize with your fellow grade parents and get to know one another. Signup for childcare provided in the inquiry center by Cary Teen Council. En español.

FWES News and Updates:
3rd grade Reading Beginning of Grade Test!
The state of NC requires all 3rd graders to take a reading test at the beginning of 3rd grade to assess reading proficiency. FWES will administer this test on Thursday, September 12th to all 3rd grade students. The test will begin at 9:30am and last until about 11:30am. Please make sure your students are on time for school as they will not be allowed to enter the classroom if the test has started.
The Reading BOG results will be shared with families and used by our 3rd grade teachers and Literacy coaches to differentiate instruction for students in ELA this year.
As the BOG contains end of third grade expectations, there will be many students who are not yet prepared and do not receive a “passing” score- but that only lets our teachers know they want to dig deeper on how to best help those students this year.
Lunch Visitors for 1st-5th Graders Can begin Monday, September 9th! We look forward to welcoming our 1st-5th grade families for lunch next week. As a reminder- lunch visitors may ONLY take YOUR student out of the cafeteria to eat on a picnic table or tall inside table for the safety and security of all students. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
Clubs at FWES for 24-25! This message is the last call for interested club sponsors- or those who would be interested in helping someone else with a club (as we want two adults and some help is needed). If you are interested in being a helper and open minded to a variety of club options, please fill out the form, too!
We will begin finalizing next week so immediate attention here is needed if you are interested! Our goal is to have things ready to go for clubs in October!

FWES News and Updates!
What an amazing 1st week of the 2024-25 school year!
Classroom highlights are related to our focus the first two weeks on building classroom community, learning/reviewing the IB Learner Profile attributes, learning/reviewing our GOLD behavior expectations and creating classroom essential agreements for learning. Students are getting to know each other and their teacher, while our teachers are getting to make connections to their students.
Classes are also beginning orientation lessons in our Inquiry Center and books are getting checked out!!!!
Specials for our students also started this week. All of our students go to Art, Music, PE, Spanish (twice) and Chinese in our specials rotation. Please make sure your student is ready for daily recess and PE with appropriate shoes and dress each day.
Looking ahead to next week, we are so excited to be welcoming our kindergartners to meet their teachers on Tuesday from 1:00-2:00pm and then for all of them to begin school on Wednesday together! Kindergarten families are invited to come on Wednesday and after dropping off your student join our counselors and our PTA for a family welcome- there will be coffee and snacks along with time to get to know other kindergarten families.

Volunteer Registration and Renew- by October 1st!!!
Please make sure you complete this process if you are a new family or a returning family interested in remaining as an approved volunteer. We love having so many volunteers and you are needed- but if you drop off the list, we cannot have you in the building again until you complete the full background check process all over again:)
Dismissal Updates
Our dismissal routines are well on their way to being established and buses and carpool are shaving minutes off our times. Thank you for your patience with all of the processes!
WCPSS bus routing is monitoring our routes each day and working to create the most efficient routes. We should expect continued monitoring and some possible changes to minimize the later arrival times to FWES.
Carpool families should note that this week- we only had ¼ of our kindergartners at school and for carpool each day…. And there were teachers with them at carpool each day, too. Next week, we will have all 110 kinders on campus and they will have to navigate carpool much more independently. So we might expect things will go back to taking a little longer next week… but rest assured that our history tells us we will be moving faster within a week of their return. Thank you for remembering what it was like for you and your kindergartner and being patient and caring through the carpool process!
Walker Permission 24-25- This link provides parents with the opportunity to allow students in 2nd-5th grades who are “Walkers” at dismissal; to walk off the porch of the school without an adult. Please read the questions carefully and understand that staff will not supervise students if they have parent permission to walk away from the school. Access to the form ends a noon each day- so that there is plenty of time to update students’ Walker tags with any changes needed.
FWES Lunch Visitors
We love having families join us for lunch, however, we need time each year to practice and establish lunch routines with students before visitors begin to join in the fun!
Monday, September 9th 1st-5th Lunch Visitors may begin joining for lunch
Monday, September 23rd Kindergarten Lunch Visitors* may begin joining us
*Please make sure your student is ready for you to come for lunch and then LEAVE them…. Sometimes students struggle at the end of lunch and if you think that will be the case, please wait a bit longer.
