    What is IB?

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation, motivated by its mission, focused on the student.  IB includes four programmes for students aged 3 to 19 designed to help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Founded in 1968, we currently work with 3,631 schools in 146 countries to develop and offer challenging programmes to over 1,116,000 students.

The IB is more than its educational programmes and certificates. At its heart it is motivated by a mission to create a better world through education. IB has a hard earned reputation for quality, for high standards and for pedagogical leadership.

The IB offers four programmes for students aged 3 to 19. The programmes can be offered individually or as a continuum by IB World Schools.

    • The Primary Years Programme (PYP) for students aged 3 to 12 started in 1997 and is now offered by 1,062 IB World Schools. The Garner Area Partnership school offering PYP is Smith Elementary School.
    • The Middle Years Programme (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16 started in 1994 and is now offered by 1,011 IB World Schools. The Garner Area Partnership schools offering MYP are East Garner Magnet Middle (Years 1 -3) and Garner High School (Years 4-5)

    • The Career-related Certificate (IBCC) for students aged 16 to 19 is a new programme within the IB

What are Colleges and Universities saying about IB Programmes?

“IB is well known to us for its excellent preparations. Success in an IB program correlates well with success at Harvard.  We are always pleased to see the credentials of the IB Diploma Programme on the transcript.” Marilyn McGrath Lewis, Director of Undergraduate Admission, Harvard University

“One of the advantages of the IB curriculum is its structure and quality.  It is a coordinated program, well established, well known and well respected.  We know the quality of IB courses, and we think the IB curriculum is terrific.” Christoph Guttentag, Director of Undergraduate Admission, Duke University

“Send us prepared students a la IB. . . It is the ‘best’ high school prep currccurriculum an American school can offer.”  Marilee Jones, Director of Undergraduate Admission, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    The Garner Area IB Partnership

Garner Area IB Partnership comprised of Smith Magnet Elementary, East Garner Magnet Middle, and Garner Magnet High School is unique in that it spans the K-12 educational continuum in one specific area of the county.  This partnership provides sustained instruction through the IB philosophy and builds program continuity.  This further supports curricular alignment across three school campuses because all of the teachers create lessons that build on the previous year.  The Garner Area IB Partnership’s “local to global” perspective allows each school to equip students with a dynamic combination of knowledge, skills, and focus on international-mindedness for the future.

What is the IB Middle Years Program offered at East Garner Middle?

Life in the 21st century places many changing demands on students making the transition through adolescence. They are at a crucial period of personal, social, physical and intellectual development, of uncertainty and of questioning. The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme is designed to help them find a sense of belonging in the ever-changing and increasingly interrelated world around them and to foster a positive attitude to learning. The IB Middle Years Programme, for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.

    IB Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

    IB Learner Profile

IB programmes continue to encourage this international-mindedness in students and educators through the IB Learner Profile traits —a set of values that represent our mission and principles. The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The learner profile provides a long-term vision of education. It is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of schools and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose. IB learners strive to be:

    • inquirers
    • knowledgeable
    • thinkers
    • communicators
    • principled
    • open-mindedcaring
    • risk-takers
    • balanced
    • reflective

    The IB Curriculum

The programme consists of eight subject groups which are taught in an interdisciplinary format across the subjects.  The subject groups include Language and literature (formerly Language A), Societies and people (formerly Humanities), Science, Mathematics, Design (formerly Technology), Language acquisition ( formerly Language B), Physical education and health, and Arts.

    IB Assessment

Assessment is criterion-related, so students around the world are measured against pre-specified criteria for each subject group. Teachers may modify these criteria to be age-appropriate in the earlier years of the programme.
