• AIG Identification Process

    STEP 1 - Nomination

Students in grades four through twelve may be nominated by parent, teachers or other school personnel for referral to the School Based Committee for Gifted Education at any time with demonstrated above grade level performance. Students may self-nominate.

    STEP 2 - Referral

The School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) considers all nominations. The committee reviews available student data and documentation based on formal and informal indicators and determines which of the nominated students will be referred.

    Grades 4-12

Referred students are scheduled for formal assessment in aptitude (Cognitive Abilities Test-CogAT) and achievement (Iowa Test of Basic Skills-ITBS) during established testing windows. The School Based Committee for Gifted Education collects student data, which may include teacher and parent checklists, academic grades in reading/language arts and mathematics, writing samples, End-of-Grade and End-of-Course tests, literacy and mathematics profiles, work samples, projects and additional information contained in the portfolio. The SBCGE will review all portfolios for demonstrated above grade level performance. The data is recorded on the Individual Student Profile.

    Required Formal Indicators for Identification

    1. Percentile score of 95%ile or higher on norm referenced aptitude or ability tests AND
    2. Percentile score of 95%ile or higher on norm referenced achievement tests in reading and/or mathematics.

    Required Informal Indicators for Identification

    1. Teacher Checklist(s) that indicate gifted characteristics in academic areas.
    2. Parent Checklist(s) that indicate gifted characteristics in academic areas.
    3. Portfolios that demonstrate multiple above-grade level work products, rubrics, and reflections within one or more specific academic areas at the student’s highest level of performance.

The SBC-GE may recommend the administration of one individual standardized test when:

    • One formal indicator is at or above 95%ile but the other formal indicator is below 95%ile AND
    • Student portfolio demonstrates performance that is a minimum of one year above grade level. The student portfolio must include math and/or literacy profile cards and above grade level work samples.  The individual test will be chosen to assess the formal area that is less than 95%ile.

    STEP 3 - Identification

The Academically Intellectually Gifted Program identifies students in kindergarten through grade twelve.

Students in grades three (second semester) through grade twelve may be identified as academically intellectually gifted if the following criteria are met:

    • Cognitive/aptitude: total score in the 95%ile or higher AND
    • Achievement: total reading and/or mathematics score in the 95%ile or higher AND
    • Portfolio supported performance that is one or more grade levels above the current grade level.

The formal identification criteria include norm referenced assessments in aptitude, reading/language arts, and mathematics, and the informal identification criteria include, but are not limited to, teacher and parent checklists, academic grades in reading/language arts and mathematics, writing samples, North Carolina End-of-Grade and North Carolina End-of-Course tests, Literacy Profiles, Math Profiles, portfolios, work samples, and projects plus any other available information.
