Early 3-Year Graduation Information
East Wake Magnet High School – 3-Year Graduation Option
East Wake Magnet High School is excited to offer an accelerated 3-Year Graduation Option for eligible students who wish to complete their high school education in three years instead of four. This program allows students to earn a North Carolina high school diploma after completing 22 required credits, as outlined by state graduation requirements.
What is the 3-Year Graduation Option?
The 3-Year Graduation Option is available to students who are at least 16 years old by their third year of high school and on track to complete the 22-credit graduation requirement. Eligible students who choose this pathway may also apply for a state-funded scholarship for post secondary education.
Who is Eligible?
Students must meet the following criteria:
✔️ Enrolled in a traditional high school (not an early college or cooperative innovative high school).
✔️ At least 16 years old by their third year of high school.
✔️ On track to complete the minimum 22 credits required for graduation.
✔️ Approved for the 3-Year Graduation pathway before the first day of 9th grade.Application Process
1️ Obtain an application from Student Services.
2️ Parents/guardians complete the application and submit it to the student’s school counselor.
3️ The counselor reviews eligibility and verifies if the student meets the requirements.
4️ A meeting with the student, parents, counselor, and administration is held to discuss expectations and finalize approval.
5️ Students must maintain academic progress to remain eligible for this program.Important Considerations
- Rigor & Course Load: Completing high school in three years requires a demanding schedule. Colleges and universities consider course rigor and overall workload when reviewing applications.
- Senior Activities: 3-year graduates do not participate in senior activities (e.g., senior breakfast, senior picnic, senior awards, etc.) but will participate in the graduation ceremony.
- Post-Graduation Status: Once students graduate, they cannot return for a fourth year or participate in school activities.
- Scholarship Opportunity: Students may apply for a state-funded scholarship through the NC FAFSA system if they enroll in an eligible UNC system university, community college, or nonprofit postsecondary institution.
Should My Student Apply?
While this program provides an accelerated pathway, we strongly encourage families to consider the academic, social, and personal implications of graduating early. We recommend that students consult with their school counselor to discuss whether the 3-Year Graduation Option aligns with their long-term goals.
For more information, please contact Student Services or visit our website to download the application and review eligibility requirements.
📌 Application Deadline: Applications must be submitted and approved before the student’s 9th-grade year.
Thank you for your support as we continue to provide flexible educational opportunities for our students!
