About Our School
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports
Herbert Akins Road Elementary is a proud participant of the PBIS program. PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors in classroom and non-classroom settings.
Students at HARES are encouraged and supported in their efforts to S.O.A.R. like their mascot, Herbie the Hawk. This acronym stands for core values of Safety, Ownership, Achievement, and Respect that should inform the decisions and actions of all staff and students. Encouragement and support take shape through the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Program which recognizes and celebrates individual excellence by awarding Hawk Eggs and cooperative class excellence through Hawk Nest celebrations. Students can spend Hawk Eggs for rewards at the school's PBIS Store and are celebrated quarterly at PBIS assemblies.
Additionally teachers recognize specific positive character traits with S.O.A.R. Rewards, a weekly school-wide character education reward program. Students can earn a S.O.A.R. Reward for showing the character trait of the month, and on Friday mornings award recipients are invited to the counseling office for a reward. In addition, their pictures are taken and posted in the display case in the lobby. Herbert Akins Road Elementary's character education traits includes the eight Wake County Public School System character education traits as well as four additional traits to cover the summer months. These twelve character education traits are listed to the right.
