English as a Second Language

The goal of ESL Services is to prepare students to function successfully in classrooms where English is the medium of instruction for all subject areas.

The mission of the WCPSS ESL Programs is to teach the English language to ESL students so they can gain access to the standard course of study, graduate with a diploma and participate fully in US society. The ESL program strives to keep ESL students in school in order to give them the English language and academic skills necessary to obtain a diploma and successfully function in the United States. ESL I

This course is recommended for students who score Entering–Level 1 on the reading section of the W–APT or ACCESS tests*. The focus of this course is to help students acquire conversational English, beginning content area oral language, and basic reading and writing skills.

ESL II

This course is recommended for students who score Emerging–Level 2 on the reading section of the W–APT or ACCESS tests*. This course focuses on developing content area academic vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing skills.

ESL III

This course is recommended for students who score Developing–Level 3 on the reading section of the W–APT or ACCESS tests*. This course continues to develop and utilize content are academic vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing skills.

ESL IV 

This course is recommended for students who have completed ESL III, but still require ESL support to be successful. This course will focus on finer details of the English language. Students will refine skills learned as they prepare to exit the ESL program. This course may not be available at all schools.

*Please note that using the proficiency level of the students for placement in each course is a general guideline. Student placement should be made based upon individual student need. The ESL teacher is the best resource for making decisions regarding course selection.
