Library Pages
5th grade

The Library Pages are fifth-grade students dedicated to service in the school library. These students are committed to the organization of the library, helping other patrons in the library, and maintaining a welcoming environment for our students and staff. Student volunteers apply for this opportunity during September and make a year-long commitment to volunteerism in their last year at Elementary School. 

Cup Stacking Club
K-5 grades

Sport/Speed Stacking is an exciting individual and team sport where competitors stack and unstack specially designed cups in predetermined sequences at lightning speed.  Students race against the clock for faster times and race against each other in relays.  Cup stacking promotes hand-eye coordination, ambidexterity, quickness, and concentration; skills needed to excel in both sports and academics.  When students are Sport Stacking, they use both sides of their bodies and brains to develop skills necessary to dribble and shoot a basketball, throw and catch a baseball, play a musical instrument, type on a computer, and more.

Drama Club
K-5 grades

Wakefield Elementary School partners with Wakefield High School's drama department, which helps direct elementary students in at least one performance a year, such as The Jungle Book or Seussical: The Musical.  Students have the opportunity to perform with high school students in some of these performances.  Students grow in their acting skills and enjoy performing in front of their families, friends, and classmates.

School Garden
K-5 grades

The school garden includes a 70’ x 70’ vegetable garden area and a demonstration garden. A Garden Advisory Board (2 or 3 students per grade level) aids in planning and executing garden plans. In partnership with Wakefield High School, fruit trees and berry bushes were planted as a resource (eventually) for students who want a healthy snack during the school day. Teachers are also able to use the grade-level garden beds to teach ecosystems, plant growth & development, North Carolina’s native plants, etc. (**We also need parent volunteers for this activity**)

Science Olympiad
3-5th grades

Science Olympiad is an activity for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders who are interested in competing in the spring NC Science Olympiad competition. NC Science Olympiad is a nonprofit organization with the mission to attract and retain K-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers in North Carolina. Club sessions expose students to a variety of science areas and help prepare them for specific NCSO events. Teamwork is valued during these hands-on, interactive, and inquiry-based activities.

Mad Science
k-5 grades

After school science fun. Engage in exciting hands-on activities; participate in inquiry-based discussions; students take home things that they have made themselves like model rockets, periscopes, Mad Science putty, and more. Explore topics such as electricity, magnetism, optics, biology and many more.

Girls on the Run
3-5 grades

Girls on the Run is a program that meets after school twice a week and uses fun lessons and running to teach girls to value team work and relationships, build their confidence, and encourage good fitness habits. At the end of the season, girls will participate in a 5K with a running buddy. 

Y-Learning and Y-Sprouts
k-5 grades

Y-Learning and Y-Sprouts is an afterschool standardized tutorial program provided by YMCA of the Triangle at our school.  This program provides a 1:6 staff-to-student ratio and always includes at least one certified teacher.
