• CTE Internships

East Wake Magnet High School is proud of the collaborative partnerships that exist between our Business Alliance members, Community Sponsors, and our fellow community schools.  An internship is an experience in which a high school student takes a responsible role as a worker in a company or organization and then reflects on the experience. This form of work-based learning intends to significantly add to the career and technical instructional program's vitality and impact a student's growth in a career pathway. Students complete internships in their junior or senior year and often have completed a level two career and technical course.

Expected outcomes of this experience for the students include:
    • Increased self-esteem and personal growth derived from successfully meeting new interpersonal and intellectual challenges.
    • Acquired new skills and knowledge.
    • Increased exposure to various work roles and career choices.
    • Increased understanding of the relationship between school-based learning and work experience.
    • Increased opportunities for high school students to explore areas of academic career or service interest.
    • Development of positive relationships between the internship program, the school, and the community.

Students must complete an application and have a pre-conference with Mrs. Coble prior to registration, and meet with a counselor one semester prior to beginning an internship. The internship may also take place during OR after the school day depending on the sponsor's hours of operation. Students complete 120 hours of on-the-job experience while working on a project of value.  16-18 week CTE Internships are offered in the Fall and Spring Semesters.  A 10-week CTE Internship may be offered during the Summer.  Students desiring course credit for an internship must complete a project and do a final presentation.  Credit and grades are assigned after the student completes specific requirements.

The North Carolina Triangle Apprenticeship Program (NCTAP)is an apprenticeship program designed to develop expertise needed in the modern workforce. The program, based in North Carolina’s Triangle area, focuses on integrated basic training which develops technical, methodological, and social skills. The core training program utilizes a hands-on approach to develop skills across a wide range of disciplines.

Starting in the 11th grade of high school, this 4-year program is divided into modules, with classes leading to an Associate’s Degree (AAS) in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Automotive Systems Technology at Wake Tech Community College or Mechatronics Engineering Technology at Vance Granville Community College and on-the-job training at participating Triangle employers.  The true benefit of the NCTAP program is not only the collaboration between schools and students, but also the free education for the student, and the paid work-based learning experiences.

Students with a passion for creativity, math, design and engineering should consider NCTAP for its promising offerings.  Recruitment begins each October and students may reach out to Mrs. Coble to tour facilities with their family members beginning in January.  Please visit the www.nctap.org site for more information about the program.
