2025 BLOG: Spreading Positivity at HCES
-
At Hortons Creek Elementary, the Positivity Project (P2) is not just a curriculum—it is a way of life. It is embedded in the way we recognize, support, and uplift our students, shaping their self-esteem and self-efficacy in powerful ways. Through intentional acts of recognition and celebration, P2 fosters a culture where students feel seen, valued, and inspired to contribute positively to their community.
One of the most impactful ways we bring the Positivity Project to life is through our Positivity Postcards. These postcards are a meaningful acknowledgment of a student's character strengths, reinforcing the idea that their actions and qualities matter. Teachers and staff carefully observe moments of perseverance, kindness, leadership, and gratitude, taking the time to celebrate these strengths in writing. Receiving a Positivity Postcard is more than just a moment of pride—it is an affirmation that a student’s efforts and values are making a difference. These small acts of recognition create lasting confidence, fostering a belief in their ability to shape their own success and contribute positively to their community.
Beyond the individual, P2 is a driving force behind our school-wide culture of joy and enthusiasm. One of our most exciting celebrations was the visit from the 'Carpool Casanova' of Mix 101.5, who brought an infectious energy to our morning arrival. Dressed head to toe in pink, our staff and students transformed a regular morning into an electrifying experience filled with music, dancing, and shared excitement. Events like these reinforce the message that school is a place where students are not only supported academically but are also celebrated for who they are. The collective energy and sense of belonging these moments create are integral to a positive school climate.
What truly sets the Positivity Project apart is its ability to nurture everyday acts of kindness. A particularly touching moment was captured when a first-grade student, unprompted, knelt down to help a kindergarten student tie their shoes during morning arrival. In that small yet profound act of kindness, we saw leadership, empathy, and an understanding of the importance of taking care of one another. These moments, both big and small, are a testament to the culture we are building—one where students recognize their ability to make an impact.
The Positivity Project at Hortons Creek is about more than just teaching character strengths; it is about living them. By recognizing students through Positivity Postcards, hosting celebrations that build community spirit, and fostering an environment where kindness is second nature, we create a school where students thrive. They learn that their strengths matter, that they are capable of leading with positivity, and that their actions shape the world around them.
As we continue to embrace the Positivity Project, we see its impact ripple beyond the walls of our school. Our students carry these lessons with them, growing into individuals who lead with empathy, resilience, and a commitment to making the world a better place. At Hortons Creek, positivity isn’t just a mindset—it’s a movement, and we are proud to see it in action every single day.
