School Profile
Heritage Middle operates on a multi-track year-round calendar. Students at the year-round schools are divided into four groups, called tracks, with each track having its own calendar. In a year-round school, the number of required school days is divided into nine-week quarters with a three-week break at the end of each quarter. Think of the year in twelve-week cycles that include nine weeks of instruction and three weeks of vacation. That vacation period varies based upon the track.
Schedules are staggered so that, at any given time, three tracks are in school and one is on break. These staggered schedules make it possible for the school to serve a larger student population. Currently, we do not have a Track 2.
Year-round schools provide a more continuous learning process. Students and teachers find that the more frequent breaks require less review than is typical after a summer vacation. Likewise, the more frequent breaks help students and staff stay more energized and focused.
At Heritage Middle School, we are proud to be known for our commitment to academic excellence and fostering positive behavior. Our dedicated staff and supportive community work together to ensure every student thrives in a safe, challenging, and nurturing environment. Please check out our School Progress Report HERE.

Principal's Message
Welcome to Heritage Middle School – Home of the Patriots!
Hello, my name is Amy Light, the proud new principal of Heritage Middle School. As a former 7th-grade assistant principal at this remarkable school, I am thrilled to return to a community that I know well and deeply appreciate. The dedication of our professionals and the strong connection with our families is what drew me back to continue our shared commitment to excellence. In my 22 years in education, my experiences have varied from elementary to middle to high school. I taught high school mathematics, became a National Board certified teacher, was selected as an NC Principal Fellow where I earned my Master's degree at East Carolina University (go Pirates!), led as an Instructional Resource Teacher and Assistant Principal, and most recently served as the Principal of North Forest Pines Elementary. I am happily married, to a fellow educator, with two step-children; a stepson at Appalachian State University and a stepdaughter who is a junior in high school. I enjoy traveling, completing puzzles, reading, being outdoors, and attending concerts in my free time.
I look forward to embarking on this journey with families and students right by my side. Ensuring that every child is seen, valued, and respected each day is a top priority for me. When we take the time to truly understand each student, we can better serve and challenge them in ways that promote both academic and social success. I am passionate about fostering an environment where students are fully engaged and active participants in their learning, and it is our responsibility to make that a reality for every child.I invite you to explore our website to find out more about who we are and how we make a positive difference in the lives of students each day.
