• JDE Parents’ Guide to JDE Remote Learning

    ‘We want to support you’

*Your wording in the staff message was FANTASTIC!  Can this be a brief message be shared with parents? Such as (but you have better wording) We know your families are experiencing extraordinary demands, but we would like to offer as much structure and academic support to your students as is possible at this time… Our grading and assignment expectations will reflect that all students will have different opportunities to access, so the focus is on continuity of learning, not assessing.

The following FAQs communicate the framework and goals of JDE’s Remote Learning:

How can I support my child’s learning?

*Please refer to district guidelines* link to parent email

We would appreciate if you could encourage your student to continue to check in on teachers’ pages daily to do what they can.

How can I best support JDE teachers?

Please add your voice to this! You do it so well! Parents, please respect that teachers also have unique home experiences with their families. Please honor their efforts and provide grace and understanding as we navigate new territory. Feel free to send emails of encouragement and love, because they need to hear their efforts are appreciated.

Our JDE teachers have been working non-stop to provide engaging and continuous learning opportunities for our students; however, like in the classroom, teachers may not be available during the remote-learning day to respond right away to all emails.  If you email a teacher, please expect that they will make their best attempt to respond during student lunchtime, between 11 am and 1 pm. (what do you think about this? Parents are emailing teachers like crazy, and I think it’s important for them to know- and teachers to know they aren’t expected to- teachers are not going to answer immediately.) Due to a flood of emails, if you don’t hear back by the following day, send a gentle reminder! While we work through this remote learning format as a school, county, and state, please expect that changes may need to occur along the way.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support!

How might we  structure our family’s day of remote learning?

JDE teams are suggesting two flexible options for your student’s daily schedule below that might fit your family’s needs. Feel free to vary the order of activities if it suits you and the number of online learners or working parents in the home.  Office Hours and Lunch Block will remain the same time each day, unless you receive communication from your child’s teacher that the schedule must be changed temporarily or permanently. Please refer to your teacher’s scheduled Office Hours (below lime green) as you make a plan.

Office Hours: During most circumstances, JDE teachers will be available for scheduled daily office hours. Please encourage your student to attend consistently when possible. At the same time each day, our teachers will invite your students to join a Google Meet. During Google Meet, the class will have an opportunity to get together virtually. Teachers may lead a Positivity Project activity in which students will have the opportunity to engage with the teacher and with each other. We feel that this is a valuable time each day for our students (and teachers!) to make those important social connections. Teachers may also use this time to introduce upcoming lessons, provide some group instruction, or answer student questions about their learning.

What Instructional Support is available? Will my child receive EC, AIG, or Tier 3 Literacy support?

Fridays are set aside for classroom teachers to focus on Instructional Support with individual or small groups of students beginning the week of April 20. (?) You will receive details about small groups from your child’s teacher sometime next week.  Friday’s schedule will still include Office Hours, Lunch, a Physical Activity and Art/Music choice for all students. If your child has an IEP, AIG, Speech, ELL, or Tier 2 or 3 Plan, please expect an email with details on how your child will continue to be served.   Details on wcpss link
