Academically & Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Instruction
Identified students receive ELA or Math instruction in the AIG classroom generally once a week. Check the Hawk News feed on our homepage for nomination window, testing deadlines, and additional announcements related to AIG services. -
English as a Second Language (ESL) Instruction
The ESL program at HARES helps students develop and improve their language proficiency in all of the four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Younger students focus on acquiring the vocabulary, oral language, and literacy skills in order to actively participate in classroom discussions and activities. Older elementary students receive extra support in learning the standards taught in the regular classroom. A strong emphasis is placed on writing across the curriculum. We have students from five different continents and many different countries who help create a rich, diverse culture at our school. -

Intervention
My role as an Intervention Support teacher is to provide direct intervention and progress monitoring for students who need support in reading and math using the MTSS framework. In addition, I facilitate and manage the development of a systematic school-wide approach to MTSS and ensure and maintain a program with fidelity from year to year. Moreover, I collaborate with school leadership that includes but is not limited to the school psychologist, Instructional Facilitator, ESL teacher, classroom teachers, academically gifted teacher, guidance counselors, and administrators. I also disseminate information about district-wide intervention programs and provide instructional support to teachers using district-mandated intervention strategies to meet the needs of each and every student. I help provide school-wide professional development on Tier 2 and 3 instructional strategies and help with documentation of support and data analysis. I conduct parent meetings for plan reviews in collaboration with the school psychologist, and other school leaders to determine the effectiveness of interventions and next steps.

Read to Achieve
The Wake County Public School System offers Read to Achieve camps to students who are not meeting reading benchmarks in first, second, and third grade. These camps are scheduled during track-out periods to provide additional support without the pressures of normal classwork. -
Single Subject Acceleration (SSA)
Distinct from AIG instruction, Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of assigning a student to a higher-grade level than is typical, given the student's age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities. SSA is an accelerative practice that allows students to show mastery of the content of a course without having taken the course. For example, a parent or guardian could nominate his or her child to skip a grade level of content in either Language Arts OR Mathematics. Parent information sessions for single subject acceleration and math placement are held, usually during the third quarter, at various middle schools throughout the county. Watch the Hawk News feed on our homepage for information about these sessions, application window announcements, and further application instructions and deadlines.
