These Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) can provide answers to many common questions about BYOD at LRHS...

What is the purpose of BYOD?
LRHS BYOD is available to students to provide digital access to support learning, enhance instruction, and provide the best possible outcome for student success.

What devices can be used in LRHS BYOD?
LRHS defines “BYOD devices” as privately owned, wireless-capable, and portable electronic devices that can be used for wireless Internet access, productivity, image/video capturing, sound recording, and information transmission. This includes devices like Smart Phones, tablets, and laptops. Note devices designed primarily for video game play are not acceptable, even if they have the ability to access the web.

Is an iPod touch or older smartphone useful as a BYOD device?
Any privately-owned wireless device can be used, provided it allows access to the World Wide Web. The exception would be devices designed primarily for video gaming, even if it includes the ability to access the web. There is no need to purchase the "latest and greatest" gadget to take part in BYOD.

Will teachers force my student to use his/her device and/or install applications?
Student-owned device usage is voluntary and will never be mandated by teachers. Teachers may request that students install apps, but will never require an app be installed. The only standard for devices is that they must have a web broswer for World Wide Web access. Any apps teachers request students install will be free apps, never paid apps. Students will need to use their own (or parent, with permission) accounts to install apps on the device.

Who decides when students use a BYOD device?
BYOD will be used for instructional purposes only. Teachers will communicate when BYOD is appropriate within their own classrooms using a stoplight system.

How do students take part in BYOD?
Students are automatically allowed to bring their BYOD device for instructional purposes. If you would prefer your student not take part and not be permitted to use their device at school, return the Parent Opt-Out form to the LRHS Media Center.

Can students share devices?
Students are prohibited from using any student-owned device other than their own. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action by the administration.

What happens if students misuse their device?
BYOD is a privilege. Administrative discipline may be required for students not following proper BYOD classroom procedures.

What happens if the device is lost, stolen, or broken at school?
By allowing a student to bring a device to school, the parent and student assumes liability for any damages or theft. School administration will investigate the issue and follow student conduct policy if needed. Students take full responsibility for their devices. Personal technology should not be left on campus before or after school hours and should never be left unattended. Staff members are not permitted to touch student-owned devices, except to confiscate them due to disciplinary reasons. We suggest keeping devices safe using some sort of case/protector, marking the device with the student's name, and keeping it in a safe place when not in use (such as a locker).

What technology support is provided?
Students are responsible for troubleshooting their own devices. No staff member is permitted to provide technical support for student-owned devices.

What network will my student's device attach to for BYOD?
LRHS has a separate network specifically for BYOD - named WAKE-BYOD. Note this network will have to be manually entered into the device and will not show up when searching for available networks. Students should not use their cellular service or data plan's network at school.

Can students be on their 3G/4G/LTE/Etc network before and after school hours?
While on school grounds, students should only be attached to the WAKE-BYOD network.

Can BYOD devices be re-charged at school?
LRHS is not responsible for providing facilities to charge devices. Devices are expected to be charged at home and put away if the battery loses its charge.

Can students bring portable re-chargers?
Yes, as long as it does not require electricity.  A place to re-charge devices will not be provided.

What is Wake County Public School's stance on electronic devices at school?
Board Policy 6446 governs the use of devices at school and defines students’ proper conduct and responsibilities while using WCPSS electronic information resources and tools. It is discussed on page 3 of the WCPSS Student Parent Handbook, which students signed agreement to at the start of the year.

Who will insure students are appropriately using their device?
Teachers will monitor student use of devices.

Can I request that my student only be permitted to use his/her BYOD device in certain classes?
No, participation in BYOD means students may use their device in any class, when instructed by the teacher. The only alternative would be to return the Parent Opt-Out form, which would prohibit the student from using the device on campus.

Can I change my mind and later enable to my student to take part in BYOD, even though I returned an Opt Out form to the Media Center?
Certainly. Contact LRHS Media Center staff to make the change at any point in time. A written letter with parent signature may be required to re-enable BYOD permission.

If a student does not have a BYOD device, what do they do while those that have one are using their devices?
BYOD is not designed for a 1:1 ratio. Teachers are designing instruction that is collaborative in nature and school owned devices are being used to supplement if needed. If technology is used to enhance a lesson, the teacher will make sure devices are equitable throughout the lesson.

Can students be on their device during lunch in the cafeteria or inbetween classes?
According to Board Policy, student-owned devices should be put away and not used except during instruction as directed by the teacher. Parents/guardians needing to contact their student during school hours should contact the school's main office.
