DEPARTMENT CHAIR

I have been a special education teacher in Wake County since 2005. Originally from Philadelphia (go Eagles!), I have lived in Raleigh for almost 20 years.

The best part about working at SCORE Academy is the opportunity to foster relationships to help students be successful in the classroom and beyond.

Leanne McClendon

Born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, I have always been deeply rooted in the Wake County community. From my earliest years, I attended all Wake County public schools, which shaped my educational journey and instilled in me a passion for learning.

After completing my schooling, I pursued higher education at Barton College and later at East Carolina University, For the past 34 years, I've had the privilege of sharing my love for learning with countless students. Teaching has been more than just a profession for me; it's been a calling—a calling that I've embraced. I find fulfillment as a committed educator, guiding students along their academic paths with joy and dedication.

Outside of the classroom, I cherish my roles as a parent and a family member. I am blessed with a son and a wonderful daughter-in-law who bring joy and fulfillment to my life. You can often find me at the gym, maintaining my physical health and well-being, or soaking up the serenity of the beach.

I have been in Wake County working with students of all abilities since 1996.  I started out supporting students with behavioral needs, on the autism spectrum, needing cross categorical resources, Occupational Course of Study, and coaching swimming and cross country running.  I enjoy any activity that takes me outside to play with my children, work with my hands, or just relaxing by a campfire.

Supporting people of all levels, needs, and abilities has been my life work, from serving as a Chaplain's Assistant in the US Army to my tenure in Wake County and community access and accessibility for adults with traumatic brain injuries.  Working at SCORE Academy is a highlight of my career and I look forward to working with all who come my way.
