The Triangle Nonprofit and Volunteer Leadership Center

For over 30 years we have provided programs to develop leadership skills and engage students in the community.  As you know, colleges are looking at all the ways students distinguish themselves in addition to their GPA. NC State - Geopaths for Incoming Freshmen

We are very pleased to offer your future NCSU students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to start their college career with a hands-on adventure like they've never experienced before. We would like to invite them to apply for the 2019 Colorado GeoJourney - NC State's only immersive geosciences field course for incoming first-year students. Each year the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences partners with the University Scholars Program to facilitate this two-week experience that builds an immediate community with a group of peers, brings the geosciences to life through a two-week field course, and starts students' college career with 3 credit-hours of coursework that may count toward their GEP required coursework. Informational Flyer The deadline to apply is May 16th.

Gardner-Webb

The Honors Experience at Gardner-Webb University is a one-week college immersion for academically gifted students in 9th -11th grade that offers college credit and a chance to interview for Gardner-Webb’s most prestigious scholarship. Students will participate in two college courses that are academically challenging, spiritually engaging, confidence building, and designed to instill the value of service learning.  Honors Experience attendees will receive an automatic nomination to compete in the Ignite Excellence Scholarship Competition during their senior year, which awards full tuition as well as room and board, totaling over $40,000 per year.  If you want to be referred, please speak to one of your teachers or counselor. ACLU Summer Advocacy Program

The ACLU Summer Advocacy Program (July 20-26) brings together high school students from across the United States to participate in a firsthand learning experience for the next generation of social justice advocates. During this week-long program in Washington, DC, students participate in electives and seminars led by lobbyists, community activists, lawyers, and ACLU experts to enhance their knowledge of civil liberties, social justice issues, and advocacy campaigns. The Close Up Foundation – a DC based civic education non-profit – partners with the ACLU to provide substantive experiential learning and small group discussion opportunities throughout the program. NC Community Development Initiative - 2019 Youth Leadership Program

The Initiative’s Youth Leadership Program aims to develop the next generation of North Carolina leaders through an intensive, innovative three-week summer program.  The Initiative invites rising high school seniors to participate in its Youth Leadership Program. Students will receive an invaluable opportunity to participate in a paid, three-week leadership development training program. Students benefit from mentorship and working alongside diverse peers from across the state while gaining real-world perspectives and insight into the nonprofit sector. Our leadership development training is specifically targeted for high school students and designed to equip students to be better prepared to take on upcoming challenges. The 2019 session will convene in Raleigh on June 27 to begin the program. The program will run through July 20. Clemson University - Summer Scholars

Join us for an exciting week filled with learning, friendship, and the Clemson experience.  Educational, recreational, and cultural activities allow participants to experience some of the amazing opportunities Clemson University has to offer. Students will engage in hands-on, immersive courses in their field of choice taught by Clemson instructors during the day.  Afternoons include free time which can be spent exploring campus, attending a campus tour, or meeting a representative from Admissions or Calhoun Honors College.  Evenings feature many of the recreational activities Clemson students enjoy, including bowling at The Underground, swimming at Fike Recreation Center, and a cookout on the beach at beautiful Lake Hartwell. Participants stay in a residence hall and eat meals in a dining hall throughout the week to complete their on-campus experience. Teens Change the World 2019 - Summer Program

This program is a week-long service and leadership experience that will give teens the opportunity to volunteer, learn about a variety of local causes, hear from social impact experts, and even pitch their ideas for social impact. 

Throughout the week-long session, Teens will:

• Earn 15 service hours in one week!
• Learn about a variety of community issues, such as poverty, hunger, and the environment
• Participate in community service projects where they can see what they’re learning in action
• Learn about the role volunteerism plays in making a difference in the community
• Tap into their personal leadership potential and explore their passion for social change
• Get hands-on experience designing their own project for social change and receive feedback and guidance from community leaders and professionals
• Pitch a service project idea for making a difference in the community during a “Shark Tank”-style showcase event for the chance to win a small grant to actually execute their project!

NC State - Exploring the Earth Summer Camp

Our free summer camp, themed “Exploring the Earth”, is a week-long day-camp held in June for high school students on NC State University’s campus. The aim of the camp is to make the geoscience fun, exciting and relevant while also raising student interest and awareness of potential geoscience majors and careers. Participating students will be exposed to research in earth science, marine science and atmospheric science. Camp counselors represent each of the three disciplines in the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at NC State. Students will participate in research activities with MEAS faculty and graduate students. Some of the activities will span multiple days in order to provide time for sampling, analysis, and discussion. Students will take local field trips throughout the week to make observations about natural points of interest. The weeklong experience will include collaboration and the development of a digital research poster to be presented to their peers, faculty, and graduate students. Transportation YOU - February 21

Sign up for our WTS Transportation YOU event on February 21^st. The event will feature Emily Blount, North Carolina’s first female professional engineer! Ms. Blount will share her trail blazing stories in the transportation industry. Also, through a hands-on engineering game, we will enhance critical thinking, team work, and decision-making skills.

NC Project SEED

NC-ACS Project SEED is a cost-free, statewide, year-round science enrichment program for academically talented students. The program includes a paid ($2500) summer internship. If selected, students who reside in Wake, Durham or Orange Counties will be responsible for their daily transportation to NC State University, North Carolina Central University, UNC-Chapel Hill or Duke University. Students will prepare their research under the supervision of a university preceptor. Throughout the year, students will present their research at various local, state, and national science competitions. The tentative dates for the program are June 13 – August 2, 2019. Project SEED is currently accepting applications from qualified 10th and 11th grade disadvantaged stuidents. VetCAMP2019

The University of Georgia is now accepting applicants to VetCAMP 2019, which is scheduled for June 16-22, 2019. This program is offered to rising high school juniors and seniors and rising college freshmen to evaluate their skills and competitiveness as future veterinarians, provide mentorship and help them experience veterinary medicine as an exciting career path. It’s a great experience and the students have a lot of fun while also learning about the profession. Martha Guy Summer Institute for Business Leaders - Appalachian State

STAR - Duke University

The STAR Program provides a hands-on, high-quality research experience during the summer academic break over 8 weeks from Mid-June to Early August. During the program, participants get the chance to:

• Work with a Duke faculty mentor on an original research project

• Submit their research for publication in a peer-reviewed journal

• Learn about research methodology, writing, statistics, medical ethics, and career development

• Students who are age 18 and above can experience clinical medicine firsthand by shadowing a physician on hospital rounds

Undergraduate students and rising junior and senior high school students are encouraged to apply. No background in scientific research is necessary, but strong academic performance and an interest in medicine and/or the sciences are preferred. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required for participation. Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar

The HOBY Leadership Seminars are designed for high school sophomores to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, schools, workplace and community. Currently, nearly 10,000 sophomores, representing as many high schools nationwide, attend HOBY Leadership Seminars each year. The seminars provide a high level of energy, encouragement and motivation, as well as interaction with peers, panelists and volunteers to nurture your future leadership roles. In addition, you will participate in hands-on leadership activities and meet state leaders in such as areas as business, government, education, media and the non-profit sector. Each Fall, every public, private and charter high school in the country is invited to select and register an outstanding sophomore as their representative to their local state seminar. There are approximately seventy Leadership Seminars held each spring throughout the United States. Middle Creek High School can nominate one sophomore to attend the 2018-19 HOBY Seminar. We will also choose one alternate if the nominated candidate is unable to attend. The date and location for the HOBY Seminar will be announced at a later date, but will run at some point between March and June of 2019.

Splash - UNC

We would like to welcome your students to a unique educational enrichment opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Splash UNC is a bi-annual program where high school students have the opportunity to attend classes taught and created by Carolina students. Classes include a variety of interesting topics ranging from chemistry and swing dancing to neuroscience and Harry Potter.The classes we are offering this semester aim to help high school students explore their current interests and discover new passions.  Splash UNC is hosting its fall program for high school students on Saturday, November 10th from 9am to 5pm. The program fee is $20 and lunch is included. We offer financial aid to any student who needs assistance to attend Splash UNC. We accept payment online through our registration page where students can also pre-order a Splash UNC t-shirt for $10. We will also accept the program fee in cash or by check the day of the event when students come to campus.

Wake Electric - Cooperative Youth Tour

Wake Electric seeks applicants for a one-week, all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the 2019 Electric Youth Tour. Winners also receive a $1,000 scholarship. Winners must go on the Washington Trip to be eligible for the $1,000 scholarship. The trip will be from June 15 – 21, 2019. Students who attend the Youth Tour will join 1,500 high school students from across the U.S. to learn about electric cooperatives, American history and the U.S. government.  Students will also visit the historic sites and federal facilities of the nation’s capital, as well as spend time with their congressional delegations. North Carolina Chapter of the AABE Youth Energy Academy 

N.C. Chapter of the AABE is excited to host this one-day event from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the campus of North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., on Saturday, Oct.13, 2018 in the Mary Townes Science Building.  

This year's theme, Power Up the Future, focuses on providing hands-on activities for high school students (grades 9-12) to increase their knowledge about the energy industry and new technologies.  Students will learn about careers, job opportunities, and occupational training requirements for different segments of the energy sector.  Students will also learn the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as they pursue their college education and future careers.   In addition, students will have the opportunity to win prizes, and each student will receive a certificate of completion.  Informational Flyer
