• Play and Ingenuity

Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, our magnet theme became Play and Ingenuity. This doesn't mean students just "playing around." Instead, it means finding new ways to meaningfully engage students in their learning while doing things that they enjoy and that interest them.

Play-based learning (grades K-2) features developmentally appropriate play that provides active exploration. It assists in building and strengthening brain pathways. Teachers and children explore, identify, negotiate, take risks and create meaning through play.

Game-Like Learning & Systems Thinking (grades 3-5) is centered around the understanding that information is not separate and isolated across content areas. Systems Thinking and game strategy build on a world that is dependent on content areas interacting in a multitude of ways. Teachers and students collaborate to solve complex problems through multiple platforms.

What kind of student are we looking for at Powell Center for Play and Ingenuity Magnet Elementary? We welcome all students who are curious, creative, hands-on learners, interested in art, design, media and technology. We will teach your child to work collaboratively and become great critical thinkers, so they will be prepared for higher education and the working world.
