    Jo Ellen Newhouse is a proud product of the Wake County Public Schools, having graduated from Enloe High.  She received her BA in English Education from UNC-CH, her M.Ed. in English from UMass-Boston, and her administrative licensure from Bridgewater State University.  Ms. Newhouse taught English at Cary High, Carroll Middle, Stoughton High (MA), and Leesville Road High.  She served as an assistant principal at Leesville Road High and Pine Hollow Middle before serving as principal of Heritage Middle School.  She is excited to return to the high school level.

    Credit by Demonstrated Mastery - (CDM) is an opportunity for students to earn a course credit by demonstrating knowledge and skills in that specific content area.  Applications will be accepted until Friday, Dec. 20.  Review information here for more details, application instructions, and contact information for questions.

     

    DECA District Competition  Make a lasting impact by volunteering as a judge for a student competition on Dec. 12 at the Raleigh Convention Center!     Pack Day Information - Next Friday, Dec. 13, is our final Pack Day of the first semester.  There are a variety of events taking place throughout the day.   Clubs and honor societies will be meeting, students will have the opportunity to get additional support in different subjects, our Sports Management class will be hosting a basketball tournament, and our sophomores will all be meeting with our counselors to work on their Career Development Plan which is needed for promotion to 11th grade.  Please remind students that this is a regular school day and they are responsible for any work that takes place in class.  If you are not familiar with Pack Day, take a moment to review the linked information  Pack Day Information.

    A special thanks to our Husky family members who served or continue to serve in our nation’s military.  We appreciate your commitment and thank you for your service to our country.  In observance, Monday is a holiday and the school is closed.

    Driver’s Education Update - Jordan Driving School has let us know that spring registration will begin January 5.  Class dates are scheduled to post December 18 at jordandriving.com  

    Important Notice for students enrolled in AP courses this fall semester: 

    All students enrolled in AP courses are expected to take the AP exam for that course in May 2025.  The College Board assesses an unused test fee of $40 for AP exams not taken.  If families know the student will not be taking the AP exam in May 2025, the parent/guardian must contact Ms. Weaver via email (lweaver2@wcpss.net) by Tuesday, Nov. 12, to avoid the $40 fee.  AP exam dates can be found here.  Early testing or testing at times other than those published by the College Board is not permitted under any circumstances.

    The NC Department of Public Instruction has partnered with Sandy Hook Promise to provide an anonymous safety tip line application to support statewide school safety initiatives and infrastructure.  All students will be trained on the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System on Wednesday, November 6th.  More information can be found here.

    Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY) school nomination forms are due Monday, Nov. 4 by 2:30pm.  Those interested should apply via this nomination form.   Students need to submit the school's nomination form, and a team will review and select a school representative for the HOBY Conference in June 2025.

    Here are this week’s announcements:

    It’s the last weekend for the State Fair:  We are proud of the combined efforts of our horticulture, carpentry, apparel, and art students.  About 50 students contributed to a magical Rapunzel entry at the State Fair in the garden competition!  If you get to the NC State Fair, please be sure to go by and see it.

    Freshman Specific Information

    All 9th graders in Healthful Living will participate in a Human Trafficking lesson over the next few weeks starting October 30th, aimed at identifying and supporting at-risk students. If you do NOT want your child to participate, please contact their Health & PE teacher by Tuesday, October 29th.  Parent letters have already been distributed and sent home with your student.  If we don't hear from you, we will assume permission is granted. For questions, please reach out to your child's counselor.

     

    Sophomore Specific Information

    There is a new state law that requires current Sophomores [and beyond] to complete a career development plan. A completed career development plan is required for grade level promotion by the end of the year.  Plans are underway to have HHS sophomores complete the following requirements that are housed by Major Clarity, a career platform that all students already have access to via their Wake ID portal: 

    • Personality Assessment

    • Career Explorations

    • Academic Course Plan

    • ACP with Major Clarity(career plan - 3 pages with signature which has the pieces above in it)

    Timeline for Sophomore CDP initial steps and upcoming homeroom announcements:

    • 10.28.24--announcement for 10th to have the personality assessment completed by 11.4.24

    • 11.4.24--announcement for 10th to complete the career explorations & select a favorite (add yellow star) by 11.18.24

    • 11.18.24--announcement for 10th students to choose a pathway in Major Clarity by 11.25.24

    Slides to be shared during homeroom with weekly steps.  

    We would like all 10th graders to have the above steps completed in major clarity by Nov. 25. Information regarding the next steps for CDP will be forthcoming.

    Good afternoon, Husky Families!

     

    Here are this week’s announcements:

    Bullying Prevention Month:  October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and we invite students to participate by wearing:

    • Blue on October 7 for World Bullying Prevention Day

    • Orange on October 16 for Unity Day

    Thank you for your continued support in promoting kindness, inclusion, and awareness.

    Check Out Request:  Please note that we have a scheduled Pep Rally on October 11th for students.  There will be no unscheduled check-outs after 12:45. If there is a need to check out your child that afternoon, please communicate with Mrs. Wood (bmwood@wcpss.net) ahead of time so it can be pre-arranged.  

     

    Counselor News:  Heritage High School is offering the SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program refresher course to 12th graders in English during October.  If you do NOT want your student to participate, please notify their English teacher by October 14. If we don't hear from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate. For any questions, please contact your student's school counselor.

     

    Credit by Demonstrated Mastery - (CDM) is an opportunity for students to earn a course credit by demonstrating knowledge and skills in that specific content area.  Initial applications will be accepted October 14 - December 20.  Review information here for more details, application instructions, and contact information for questions.

     

    Wake Tech Dual Enrollment (Career and College Promise) for the Spring 2025 is open for new and current CCP students.  Information about the program and next steps can be found here.  Be sure to review Heritage HS specific information/action steps here.

    Homecoming Events:  October 7th-11th is Spirit Week!

    • Monday:  Tie vs. Tie-Dye  -if it’s a blue tie or tie-dye, even better!

    • Tuesday: Biker vs. Surfer 

    • Wednesday: Jersey Out

    • Thursday: Throwback Thursday

    • Friday: Class Colors (9th = white, 10th = gray, 11th = navy, 12th = neon green)

    We are excited to announce this year’s Homecoming Dance, themed “Under the Sea,” which will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Heritage High School from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The doors will open at 6:45 PM, and the event promises to be a fun and memorable evening for our students.  Please review dance rules and procedures here:   Homecoming Ticket Information Sales close October 7.     Hurricane Helene Relief Effort - We have two groups who are collecting donations for Hurricane Helene victims through October 11.  Our FFA students are working with the Wake Forest and Rolesville Fire Departments to get these donations to western areas in need. Our Student Athletics Representatives' are collecting donations as part of the Region 3 drive, led by Athens Drive High SAAC members, who will get these items to affected schools. 

     

    Picture Makeup NEW DATE - If your 9th-11th grade student missed school picture day last week, make-ups/retakes are scheduled for Friday, October 18th.

    PTSA Information - The next PTSA meeting on Tuesday, October 8 at 6:30pm in the Media Center.  All are welcome!

    Financial Aid Night will be Wednesday, October 9th, at 6:30pm in the Heritage HS Auditorium. Ms. Waldrum, our Financial Aid Advisor, will share general information about financial aid and specific information about the FAFSA.

    Counselors are finishing Senior Meetings this week.  Seniors are encouraged to bring their completed senior info sheet and updated resumes to their meetings.  100% of our seniors will receive individual planning time with their counselor to accomplish necessary tasks for post high school transition.  Seniors do not need to sign up.  Counselors work with teachers to coordinate meeting time during class.
