Academy of Small Business Development
-
The Academy of Small Business Development is a small learning community within Wakefield High School. Designed as a four-year high school program, the Academy has an open and equitable student recruitment process that results in a student body that reflects the demographics of the school community. However, to apply, students must be assigned to Wakefield High as their base school. Once accepted into the program, students remain together throughout high school with a core group of specially trained teachers. The Academy model provides an environment for these teachers to develop interdisciplinary activities that make learning relevant and capture students' interest. Through real-world, hands-on experiences, the Academy exposes students to various careers.

Career Academy
Career Academies are personalized small learning communities within a school comprised of a small group of students and teachers for four years. Academy classes are usually blocked back-to-back in the daily schedule, and students attend them as a group. Students are able to complete academy requirements within the regular school day, with the exception of work internships. Career Academies are open for rising Freshmen. Applications are accepted on a rolling admissions basis.
Students who are admitted to the Career Academy will begin taking a sophomore-level career/academic cohort class to show the applications of academics in real-world situations. After investigating their career interests and completing an entry-level career academy course, students agree to commit to the Career Academy for the remainder of their academic career. This commitment will culminate in an internship during the student's senior year at a local business to see how all of their studies apply in a “real world” situation.
