How are Plan B/remote learning and Virtual Academy different?
-
What do you anticipate a typical day will look like for students?
We are working on the logistics of daily schedules and plan to release those via email/Bulldog Blast and post to our school website as we get closer to the reopening of school.
Parents and students can expect that students will have some learning experiences for which they will need to be in attendance and attentive during specific hours of the day. However, students will also have some flexibility to work at their own pace and schedule over the course of the day depending on family needs. Consistent daily schedules will include online instruction that will be a combination of live and recorded sessions.
During instructional time, there will be opportunities to learn individually, in small groups, and in large groups using both print and digital materials. Social and emotional wellness will be taken into consideration in scheduling. Our intent is to align the online instruction experience of students who are participating in Plan B with the Virtual Academy student experience.
-
If one teacher per grade is pulled to teach Virtual Academy, won't that make the remaining Plan B classes larger than normal?
Class sizes will often be approximately one-third the normal size when students are on campus. The larger goal, however, is to meet social distancing guidelines. We will be looking at the number of students participating in Plan B and Virtual Academy to help build balanced class sizes, as well as ensure we are following the K-3 Class Size Law.
-
Will a student's in-person teacher be the same as the remote teacher?
We are still waiting for guidance/best practices to be released from WCPSS so that we can look at all options for assigning teachers to classes. We are also waiting to get details about the accommodations that staff will need either in Plan B/Blended or for Virtual Academy. We are also waiting to find out how many students will be part of Virtual Academy and how many will be part of Plan B/Blended. We expect to be able to make those decisions closer to the start of school and will communicate with families.
-
Would moving between Plans A-B-C end up changing which teacher a child has?
Ultimately our goal is to keep classes and teachers as consistent as possible. This may also depend on the grade, subject, and staffing. Teams of teachers will work collaboratively to ensure that subjects and activities are covered both in the classroom and virtually.
-
Can you request to be in the same cohort group (1, 2, 3) as a neighbor?
Group assignments will be first developed to place siblings who live in the same household in the same groups and organized by bus transportation patterns. After that, schools will complete the group assignments with the remaining students assigned to their school. One of the factors schools will be considering is the academic needs of their students. Due to the complexity of developing group assignments, requests cannot be honored.
-
Will simultaneous learning/live stream classes be used?
There will be a combination of actual live sessions and recorded sessions. There also will be opportunities for independent practices and activities that are able to be completed not using a device. These will be based on a number of factors, including subject area, age/grade level and more.
Schools are not able to "live stream" due to protecting the security of our students working online and the networking capabilities would not be able to support staff simultaneously online at the same time.
-
Will Virtual Academy students have opportunities to put pencil to paper in addition to digital work?
The amount of time a student will spend in front of a device will depend on the age of the student and which courses they are taking. There will be ample time for independent learning activities and breaks, including lunch and time for physical and other activities, built into the schedule.

-
During the virtual open house for Virtual Academy, it was shared that schools will assemble supplies for VA students to have at home. When will they be distributed?
We are waiting for additional guidance on this, but as soon as we have needed supplies ready will inform families of the process for picking up supplies, manipulatives, and such.
-
Will there be teacher consistency with the Plan B option? Will they have the same teacher for both in person and remote?
This will depend on the grade, subject and staffing. Teams of teachers will work collaboratively to ensure that subjects and activities are covered both in the classroom and virtually.
-
How will families and students feel connected to York if they choose Virtual Academy?
Family engagement will continue to be a major area of focus this year for our LeaderSIP team, Administration, and PTA. We always welcome ideas from families! Staff and teachers will be working really hard to help families and students stay and feel connected to the York family regardless of the platform students/families choose.
-
Will students be assigned a York teacher even if families sign up for Virtual Academy?
Our goal is to keep Virtual Academy in house at York to the greatest extent possible.
-
Will Kindergarten students have staggered entry?
At this time, all students will start the first two weeks of school remotely, so there will not be a staggered entry. Should things change as we look to transition back into Plan B we may have additional information to share.
-
What specials will be offered for elementary VA students?
We are still waiting for guidance from WCPSS about specials classes and will communicate that with families as soon as we can.
-
What will happen if there is a case/some positive cases of COVID 19 at school?
We will report suspected, presumptive, or positive cases of COVID-19 to Wake County Public Health and work with them for follow-up and contact tracing. If a person with COVID-19 was in a WCPSS facility while infectious, we will coordinate with local health officials to notify employees and families while maintaining confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, NCGS 130A-143, and all other state and federal laws.
In the event of a confirmed case of COVID-19 in a school, the affected areas will be closed for 24 hours, then systematically disinfected.
