• Approach a teacher or coach at BHS – many times teachers and coaches will have jobs you can do before and after school or during lunch.
• Do you belong to a church, mosque, synagogue? All of these organizations are non-profits. Approach the administrative staff and ask if they have volunteer work you can do.
• Do you still have teachers, staff and coaches at your old elementary and/or middle school you can help? All WCPSS schools are non-profit organizations.
• Do you live close to a church, synagogue, mosque, public library or school? You can offer to volunteer at any of them for service hours.

On-Going Opportunites Throughout the School Year

Windsor Point Retirement Home. Many times interacting with young people is a treat for an elderly person residing in a retirement facility.  Grab some friends and come lead a simple craft, deliver a homemade card, bring a special snack or pop by with a gentle pet at Windsor Point's healthcare unit. Ideas are welcome! Hours are flexible and can work with your schedule. Blue Jay Point County Park  has several volunteer events coming up during the Spring semester that would be great Community Service opportunities for high schoolers! The Woman’s Club of Raleigh is a non-profit which offers various service opportunities to the community at large and specifically to the students throughout Wake County through grants and scholarships. We need volunteers on an ongoing basis: 2 students on the 4th Tuesday of each month January-May @3:30 for setting up for board meetings. Community Hope is an academically structured mentoring and literacy program that addresses the individual learning needs and holistic growth of students living in under resourced communities in Raleigh.  The Community Hope Mentoring program matches a volunteer mentor (ages 16+) with a child.  Our mentors meet with their students once a week throughout the traditional school year. Through this one-on-one mentoring relationship, students receive support, affirmation, and guidance from a positive role model to encourage their personal character development and academic success. With your help, students can gain more than one grade level of literacy proficiency each year as well as an expanded vision for their future. The Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill Since opening our doors in 1988, the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill has provided a “home-away-from-home” for more than 40,000 families of ill or injured children, who must travel to our area for specialized medical care. When a family checks in to the House, they will find a private hotel-style room awaiting them, two large kitchens stocked with all the basics along with a home-cooked dinner each evening, laundry facilities, indoor and outdoor play spaces, free transportation to the hospital and most importantly—they will feel the tangible support of the North Carolina community surrounding them. Swim for Life Volunteer Instructors – Alexander Family YMCA At the Y we believe swimming is a life skill and all children and adults should have access to water safety classes and basic swim lessons. Beeloved Community Garden The Beeloved Community Garden is located at 2506 Vanderbilt Street in Raleigh. The garden is a project of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church with a focus on providing forage for pollinators and a place for all community members to gather and enjoy nature. We are in need of volunteers to help us prune and maintain the garden. Workdays are scheduled on first Saturdays from 8 to 11 am . Morningside of Raleigh always give seniors more, and right now, we’re looking for student volunteers to add even more to our resident’s lives. Join our shining star volunteer program! Visit with residents, assist with activity programs, read to and lead games with residents and also deliver mail and gifts to our residents. When the community has big events, we could use a hand with the set up. This organization is a for-profit organization but the hours will qualify for BHS service hours. The Green Chair Project Looking for flexible after-school service hours in a place of encouragement and hope?  Help local families transitioning from homelessness at The Green Chair Project.  Sign up online whenever you need hours (open Tues-Fri, 10-5).  No experience necessary ---greet visitors, process donations, or help with Front Desk closing duties.  Only a 7 minute drive from BHS or take the Go Raleigh bus to the Greyhound stop on Capital Boulevard (Green Chair is across the street, next to the Salvation Army). Assistance League of the Triangle Area Want to help women and children in the Triangle Area? Assistance League of the Triangle Area [www.altriangle.org] is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and children through several programs including Operation School Bell* which gives new clothing and school supplies to school children. The A-Z Thrift Shop, our primary source of funds, needs volunteers to assist with picking up/delivering furniture and household items to our shop year round on Mondays between 9:30am-12:30pm and some Sunday afternoons. NC Food Bank Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Food Bank’s mission. Every day. Food Bank volunteers are making a tangible contribution to our communities. Safe Haven for Cats Do you love cats? Become involved with a great organization for fostering and adopting cats! The minimum age to register as an adult volunteer is 16.  Our biggest need is on our shelter cleaning team, which is every day of the week from 9am-11am, including Saturdays and Sundays. A Place at the Table is a welcoming and inviting space that provides an opportunity for all people to come and experience conversation and community while enjoying an excellent, fresh and healthy meal. The restaurant provides a “pay what you can” model and offers diners several opportunities of payment to help “pay it forward” to pay for meals for those who cannot afford one. Operation Catnip We are an animal welfare organization that specializes in a monthly clinic that sterilizes and vaccinates community (feral and stray) cats.  The volunteer positions students would fill would involve no direct contact with the animals.  We are looking for students who are interested in learning how to humanely trap a cat and, if they drive, and are comfortable, transport cats to and from clinic. They would be instructed on the best practices for transport.  The students would have direct support at all times. Volunteer opportunities at clinic are on a first come, first served basis.  We have between 6 and 8 spaces a month for non-rabies vaccinated volunteers that help in the trap room and the recovery room.  Set up is usually scheduled the Saturday before a clinic and is from 9 to 11.  Clinic starts at 8 am the following Sunday.  Clinic clean up starts between 11:30 and noon the day of clinic.
