The English department strives to prepare every student to write well, to think well, and to effectively analyze both fiction and non-fiction.
In 9th and 10th grades, students read works of world literature; study word parts from Greek and Latin roots; write about poetry, fiction and non-fiction; and review grammar concepts which make them better writers. Student may opt to take Paideia in 9th grade, where they have the opportunity to participate in Socratic seminars and to study the history and literature concurrently.
In 11th and 12th grades, when students may opt to take AP or IB English, classes read the works of American and British writers; study words which prepare them for the ACT and SAT; write about poetry, fiction, and non-fiction; and review grammar concepts which make them better writers.
All English classes emphasize class discussion and the development of critical thinking skills.
We also offer electives which allow our students to explore other cultures, to practice speech and debate, to experiment with poetry and short story writing, and to publish both our school newspaper and yearbook. Consider enrolling in Mythology, Speech, Creative Writing, Sports and Young Adult Literature, Yearbook, or Newspaper classes.
