    Second Step

    SECOND STEP Social-Emotional Skills for Grades K-5

    Second Step is an established, research-based national program that the Wake County Public School System has adopted. The program teaches social-emotional skills, problem-solving, goal-setting, attention skills, and more.                   

    Here are the strategies your K-5 child will be learning over the 2023-2024 school year: 

    • Unit 1: Growth Mindset and Goal Setting (and in K and 1st, Whole Body Listening);

    • Unit 2: Emotion Management;

    • Unit 3: Empathy and Kindness

    • Unit 4 will be Problem-Solving.

    FOR KINDERGARTEN AND 1ST GRADE FAMILIES: IN ENGLISH Y ESPAÑOL

    Kindergarten Unit 1: Growth Mindset and Goal Setting

    Week 1, Lesson 1: We Watch, We Listen, We Think   En Espanol Unit 1 Leccion 1

    With adult support, students will demonstrate they know ways to pay attention (watching and listening carefully, answering questions that show comprehension).

    Week 2, Lesson 2: Why We Pay Attention  En Espanol Unit 1 Leccion 2  

    With adult support, students will be able to identify two important reasons to pay attention: To learn and to stay safe.

    Week 3, Lesson 3: Mistakes Are Okay  En Espanol Unit 1 Leccion 3

    With adult support, students will recognize that mistakes are a part of learning by encouraging others when they make mistakes.

    Week 4, Lesson 4: Practice Makes Better  En Espanol: Unit 1 Leccion 4

    With adult support, students can name two ways they can get better at something: Practice and keep trying.

    Week 5, Lesson 5: Performance Task--Let's Practice and Learn!  En Espanol: Unit 1 Leccion 5

    Students will be able to demonstrate attention and use kind words to encourage themselves and others while learning something new together.

    Unit 2: Emotion Management

    Week 1, Lesson 6: Sometimes We Feel Happy/A Veces Nos Sentimos Felices

    Objective: With one adult prompting, students will be able to give at least one reason why they think someone is feeling happy.

    Objetivo: Con el estímulo de un adulto, los ninos serán capaces del dar al menos una razon por la que creen que alguien se siente feliz.

    Week 2, Lesson 7: Sometimes We Feel Sad/A Veces Nos Sentimos Tristes

    Objective: Students will be able to give at least one reason why they think someone feels worried.

    Objetivo: Con el estímulo de un adulto, los ninos serán capaces del dar al menos una razon por la que creen que alguien se siente feliz. 

    Week 3, Lesson 8: Sometimes We Feel Mad/A Veces Nos Sentimos Enfadados

    Objective: With adult prompting, students will be able to give at least one reason why they think someone is feeling mad. 

    Objetivo: Con el estímulo de un adulto, los ninos serán capaces del dar al menos una razon por la que creen que alguien enfadado.

    Week 4, Lesson 9: We Can Feel Calm/Podemos Sentirnos Tranquilos

    Objective: With adult prompting, students will be able to practice asking for help and slow breathing as ways to feel calm. 

    Objetivo: Con el estímulo de un adulto, los nino serán capaces de practicar como pedir ayuda y usar la respiracion pausada como distintas maneras para sentirse tranquilos.

    Week 5, Lesson 10: Performance Task--What Are They Feeling/Tarea de desempeno: ?Que Estan Sintiendo?

    Objective:

    Students will be able to:

    • Demonstrate using context and behavior clues to label feelings
    • Demonstrate slow breathing

    Los ninos seran capaces de:

    • Demonstrar el uso de pistas de contexto y comportamiento para rotular los sentimientos.
    • Demonstrar la respiracion pausada.

    Unit 3: Empathy and Kindness

    Week 1, Lesson 11: We Can Be Kind

    Summary

    In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that a kind act is something they can do to help someone feel good. They’ll practice suggesting kind acts to do for people in different scenarios.

    Try This at Home

    Encourage your child to think of a kind act they could do for someone, for example, a sibling, grandparent, or neighbor.

     

    Lección 11: Podemos ser amables

    En la lección de esta semana, su hijo aprenderá que un acto de bondad es algo que puede hacer para ayudar a alguien a sentirse bien. Practicará sugiriendo actos de bondad para personas en diferentes escenarios.

    ¡Háganlo ustedes!

    Anime a su hijo a pensar en un acto de bondad que podría hacer por alguien, por ejemplo, un hermano, un abuelo o un vecino.

     

    Week 2, Lesson 12: 

    HEARTS

    Why Kindness?

    Summary

    In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that kindness is a way to show people that they care and that doing kind acts can make both the giver and the receiver feel good. They’ll share personal examples and discuss how they felt when they gave or received kind acts.

    Try This at Home

    Help your child think of a kind act they can do for someone and support them in carrying it out. With your child, discuss how they think the receiver of the kind act felt. Ask your child how they felt doing a kind act for someone.

    Lección 12: ¿Por qué la amabilidad?

    Resumen

    En la lección de esta semana, su hijo aprenderá que la amabilidad es una forma de demostrar a las personas que se preocupa por ellas y que realizar actos de bondad puede hacer que tanto el dador como el receptor se sientan bien. Compartirá ejemplos personales y discutirá cómo se sintió cuando realizó o recibió actos de bondad.

    Ayude a su hijo a pensar en un acto de bondad que pueda hacer por alguien y apóyelo para llevarlo a cabo. Discuta con su hijo cómo cree que se sintió el receptor del acto de bondad. Pregúntele a su hijo cómo se sintió al hacer un acto de bondad por alguien.

    Week 3, Lesson 13: 

    Showing Kindness

    Summary

    In this week’s lesson, your child will practice two kind acts: Asking, “Would you like to share?” and “Would you like a hug?”

    Try This at Home

    Encourage your child to offer to share items at home. For example, have them help you make a snack and then offer to share it with other family members. Encourage them to offer hugs to family members or friends when they are tired or sad or need encouragement.

    Lección 13: Mostrar amabilidad

    Resumen

    En la lección de esta semana, su hijo practicará dos actos de bondad: preguntando, “¿Te gustaría compartir?” y “¿Quieres un abrazo?”

    ¡Háganlo ustedes!

    Anime a su hijo a que se ofrezca a compartir objetos en casa. Por ejemplo, pídale que le ayude a preparar una merienda y luego ofrezca compartirla con otros miembros de la familia. Anímelo a ofrecer un abrazo a familiares o amigos cuando estén cansados o tristes o necesiten aliento.

     

    Week 4, Lesson 14: 

    KINDNESS AT SCHOOL

    Kindness At School

    Summary

    In this week’s lesson, your child will learn different ways they can show kindness at school. The class will share ideas for kind acts they could do for one another.

    Try This at Home

    Ask your child to tell you about the kind acts they and their classmates have been doing for one another at school this week.

    Lección 14: Amabilidad en la escuela

    Resumen

    En la lección de esta semana, su hijo aprenderá diferentes formas de mostrar amabilidad en la escuela. La clase compartirá ideas sobre actos de bondad que podrían realizar unos por otros.

    Pídale a su hijo que le cuente los actos de bondad que él y sus compañeros de clase han estado realizando en la escuela esta semana.

     

    Week 5, Lesson 15: 

    AT SCHOOL

    Performance Task: Demonstrating Kindness

    Summary

    In this week’s lesson, your child will show what they’ve learned about kindness and the power of kind acts to help people feel good. They’ll draw themselves doing a kind act for someone at school.

    Try This at Home

    Ask your child to show or tell you about their drawing of doing a kind act for someone at school. Encourage them to draw a picture of themselves doing a kind act at home too.

    Lección 15: Demostrar amabilidad

    Resumen

    En la lección de esta semana, su hijo mostrará lo que ha aprendido sobre la amabilidad y el poder de los actos de bondad para ayudar a las personas a sentirse bien. Se dibujará a sí mismo realizando un acto de bondad para alguien en la escuela.

    ¡Háganlo ustedes!

    Pídale a su hijo que le muestre o le cuente sobre su dibujo de un acto de bondad para alguien en la escuela. Anímelo a que haga un dibujo de sí mismo realizando un acto de bondad en casa también.

    Unit 4: Problem-Solving

    Week 1, Lesson 16: We Can Say the Problem

    Overview: With adult support, students will be able to repeat a clearly stated problem in a given scenario.

    Week 2, Lesson 17: Ready to Solve Problems

    Overview: With adult support, students will be able to name “feeling calm” as a helpful first step for problem-solving in a given scenario.

    Week 3, Lesson 18: Apologizing Can Help

    Overview: With adult support, students will be able to demonstrate apologizing as a problem-solving strategy in a given scenario.

    Week 4, Lesson 19: Taking Turns and Sharing

    Overview: With adult support, students will be able to demonstrate offering to share or take turns as problem-solving strategies in a given scenario.

    Week 5, Lesson 20: Performance Task/We Can Solve Problems

    Overview: With less adult support, students will be able to demonstrate a problem-solving process in a given scenario.
    Performance Task with Rubric: In performance tasks, students demonstrate skills and knowledge in fun and creative ways, providing evidence of their transfer of learning.
