Core Class Registration
For core classes (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies), all students will be enrolled in the next course in sequence. For example, students currently enrolled in ELA 7 will be automatically registered for ELA 8. Students who meet the criteria for advanced math classes (including double math) and Earth/Environmental Science will be notified after EOG scores are received, and registration requests will be updated accordingly.
For more information about core classes, English as a Second Language (ESL), or Special Education, refer to the WCPSS Middle School Program Planning Guide.
Elective Registration
In addition to their required core classes, students have the opportunity to take up to 16 different electives. Students should use this worksheet to determine which electives they would like to take.
Directions/Notes:
-
- Review the Elective Course Description Guide to learn about each course and the prerequisites, if applicable.
- Select 16 elective courses. Number these courses 1-16, from most to least preferred.
- Select 4 alternates. Mark these courses with an A.
- Elective courses are either quarter-long (Q), semester-long (S), or year-long (Y).
- Courses marked with an asterisk (*) require an audition, application, or are only open to certain students. Review our Audition/Application Information to learn more.
Important Reminders
Remember:
- Students are registering for classes for the entire 2026-27 school year.

- Students should be prepared to take any electives they request, including those listed as alternates.
- All students are encouraged to have a movement elective (Dance or Physical Education) each quarter.
- Students are encouraged to request multiple levels of courses (i.e., Drawing I and Drawing II).

New Courses for 2026-27
We're excited to offer the following courses for the first time next school year:
- Exploratory Language (French or Spanish)(Q): This course is intended as a link between an elementary language program or as an initial introduction to the language. This course does not aim to build proficiency in communication skills, but rather to increase understanding of culture, build an appreciation for the value of learning another language, and increase the motivation for future language study.
- Heritage of Wake County - Raleigh (Q): “Wake” up and learn about the rich history that surrounds us! In this class, you’ll learn about the history of Raleigh (and Ligon!) by studying important people, places, and events. Local field trips and guest speakers will be a prominent feature of the course.
- Sports Variety (Q): Improve your coordination, confidence, and knowledge of a variety of sports! In this class, you’ll learn to play sports such as basketball, floor hockey, flag football, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball.
- Team Recreational Games (Q): Learn the skills to play a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational games! In this class, you’ll learn to play games such as badminton, bowling, cornhole, frisbee, golf, kickball, wiffleball, and tennis.
- Peer Helpers (8th Grade Only, Application Required)(S): Peer Helpers partners general education students with students from Ligon’s Extended Content Standards (ECS) class in the same physical education class to practice inclusion and fitness. This course allows for students with disabilities to socialize with their peers, and for general education students to deepen their understanding of developmental differences. Under the guidance of a Health/PE teacher, students will be expected to plan and execute a variety of PE games and activities.
- Dance in the Media (Q): Learn about various dance styles and characteristics through media sources such as television, magazines, and newspapers. Students will use hit television shows to learn about different styles of dance and how to critique dance. In addition, students will read and analyze articles and critiques about dance from magazines and newspapers to learn the differences between dance styles and dance careers. Students will also have a chance to create their own dances inspired by different media sources.
- Tenor-Bass Vocal Ensemble (Y): This mixed-level (6th-8th) ensemble is for all male-identifying singers. Students will develop their knowledge of vocal production, technique, interpretation, and note-reading. They will be challenged to harmonize and perform a variety of genres as they prepare to perform at the annual Music Performance Adjudication. Tenor-Bass Ensemble will also have the opportunity to perform for the community and at out-of-state choral festivals.
