Principal's Message (1/30/26)
Posted by Darren Williams on 1/30/2026Happy Friday, Ligon Families:
Thank you for your patience and support as we navigated this week’s inclement weather, our first remote instruction days, and yesterday’s adjustments to carpool. While our campus has finally thawed out, it looks like more wintry weather is on the way!
Stay safe and warm,
Dr. Williams

Principal's Message (1/23/26)
Posted by Darren Williams on 1/23/2026Happy Friday, Ligon Families:
First and foremost, thank you for your support throughout the day on Tuesday! I am incredibly proud of the way our students and staff navigated such a challenging day. As several families have asked, please know that the decision not to communicate additional details about the threat was made in collaboration with the district’s communications and security departments — we wanted to prevent "copycats" and to avoid sharing too much insight into how the school system and law enforcement respond to emergencies. I understand that this conflicts with our need to be informed as parents. While this remains an active investigation, we are confident it was a hoax. We have also learned that similar threats were made to other schools across the state throughout the week.As a reminder, school will be closed for students on Monday, January 26th. Students should also be prepared to engage with remote learning activities if the impending weather prevents us from being at school on Tuesday. Tuesday is also the first day of Quarter 3/second semester.
Enjoy your weekend,
Dr. Williams

Welcome, Ms. Yearick!
On Tuesday, the WCPSS Board of Education approved Ms. Kendra Yearick's appointment as the newest Assistant Principal at Ligon! Ms. Yearick completed her administrative internship at Dillard Drive Magnet Middle after teaching for 10+ years at Fuquay-Varina High. Her first day will be Monday, January 26th. Welcome, Ms. Yearick!Revised Administrator Responsibilities
Several administrative responsibilities will shift when Ms. Yearick joins us on Monday. Notably, Ms. Liggett will transition to supporting 8th grade and Mr. Glasgow will transition to supporting 7th grade. Ms. Yearick will serve as our 6th grade Assistant Principal. This marks the beginning of “looping” at Ligon. If you’re unfamiliar, looping refers to school staff “moving up” with students at the end of each school year. Looking ahead to the 2026-27 school year, Ms. Yearick will move up to 7th grade with our current 6th graders and Mr. Glasgow will move up to 8th grade with our current 7th graders. Our counselors’ grade level assignments will not change this school year:
- 6th Grade AP: Ms. Yearick; 6th Grade Counselor: Ms. Douglas
- 7th Grade AP: Mr. Glasgow; 7th Grade Counselor: Ms. Treleven
- 8th Grade AP: Ms. Liggett; 8th Grade Counselor: Ms. Weaver
The full breakdown of our revised areas of responsibility can be found here.
Preparing for Remote Learning Days
Please be prepared for the possibility of WCPSS calling for “remote learning days” due to inclement weather next week. Students should mark their attendance and access assignments via Canvas. No new content will be covered and no live (synchronous) instruction will occur. Assignments and activities will be designed to reinforce previously taught material through remediation, practice, or enrichment.Upcoming Emergency Drills
In light of Tuesday’s evacuation, please know that we are scheduled to have both a fire drill and our annual lockdown drill within the next two weeks. Please talk with your student(s) to help prevent unnecessary fear or anxiety when these drills are conducted.MOY STAR Assessments
Students will take their middle-of-the-year STAR Math & Reading assessments on Thursday, January 29th and Friday, January 30th. As a reminder, these are ungraded diagnostic assessments used to help inform classroom instruction and identify students who need additional support. Please remind your student(s) of the importance of trying their best on these assessments! Assistant Principal Vacancy
Just before winter break, the WCPSS Board of Education approved Mr. McRae’s transfer to Enloe HS as an Assistant Principal. We are thrilled that his new role, which he started today, will allow him to reconnect with former Ligon students and to support many of our current students again when they matriculate to high school. Our search for a new Assistant Principal is already underway; however, questions and concerns previously shared with Mr. McRae should be directed to me until a hire is made.
Remote Learning Plans
A few months ago, WCPSS adopted a new remote learning policy for weather-related and emergency school closures. The policy, which grants the Superintendent authority to declare a limited number of remote learning days, will allow learning to continue without needing to add make-up days to the school calendar. This approach helps reduce disruptions to family schedules, keeps students connected to learning during unexpected closures, and aligns WCPSS with neighboring school districts using similar practices.Moving forward, if WCPSS calls for a remote learning day, students will access asynchronous assignments via Canvas. No new content will be covered and no live (synchronous) instruction will occur. Assignments and activities will be designed to reinforce previously taught material through remediation, practice, or enrichment. In the coming weeks, our teachers will talk with students in greater detail about what to expect if/when a remote learning day occurs.
Student Checkout Reminders
As we head into the new calendar year, please be reminded that daily student checkout stops at 1:50 PM. After that, you will need to wait for all students to be dismissed at 2:20 PM. Additionally, please remember that a valid form of identification (driver’s license) must be presented if you are picking up your student early.Ligon: Let’s Talk

Quarter 2 Interim Reports
Students received Quarter 2 interim reports today during Homeroom. Please take time this weekend to review your child’s grades and attendance with them over the weekend. Interim reports do not need to be signed or returned to school. Questions should be directed to your child’s teacher(s).Notification of State Designations
Based on last year’s data, our school has been designated as a Targeted Support and Improvement — Consistently Underperforming (TSI-CU) and Additional Targeted Support & Improvement (ATSI) school, as defined by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), by the State Board of Education. Students received a notification letter regarding these designations today during Homeroom. It is important to remember that just as no single score or grade tells the whole story of a student, neither does it tell you everything about a school's performance or the opportunities that our school provides. The intent of receiving these designations is to improve educational outcomes for all students, close achievement gaps, increase equity, and improve the quality of instruction.
Student Assignment Notifications
Families with Infinite Campus Parent Portal accounts can now view their 2026-2027 base school assignment notifications online. Students whose families do not have Infinite Campus Parent Portal accounts received printed notifications today during Homeroom.

All money raised goes to Ligon Arts Boosters (LAB) and equally supports all arts areas!Arts Spirit Week
