    Quarter 3 Interim Reports

Quarter 3 interim reports were distributed to students yesterday (Thursday) during 4B. Please find time to review these with your child over the weekend. Interims do not need to be signed or returned to school. If you have any questions/concerns, please contact your child’s teacher(s) directly. If your child hasn’t received their Q3 interim report, contact their Homeroom (4B) teacher.

    2026-27 Course Registration

Next week, our school counselors will finish visiting students’ classes to share information about course registration for the 2026-27 school year. Current 8th grade students are learning about high school registration, while current 6th and 7th graders are learning about next year’s elective course offerings at Ligon.

When your child brings home their course registration worksheet, please review their selections:

    • If a change needs to be made to a current 8th grade student’s selections, complete this Google Form. All changes must be requested by March 13th. After this date, any changes will need to be communicated to the high school the student will be attending. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Weaver (aweaver2@wcpss.net).
    • Revisions to current 6th and 7th grade students’ selections do not need to be shared/communicated. Instead, they’ll be reflected whenever students register in Infinite Campus.

    Happy Friday, Ligon Families:

This week’s warmer weather corresponded with an increase in horseplay and general rambunctiousness. And, while there’s plenty of room for “fun” at school, we need your help in reminding students to follow teachers’ expectations and school-wide rules.

Please see below for additional announcements and reminders for this week.

    Enjoy your weekend,

    Black History Month Spirit Week

Encourage your student(s) to participate in next week’s Spirit Week:

    • Monday, February 23rd: “Literary Heroes” - Dress as a character from a book written by a Black author!
    • Tuesday, February 24th: “Colors of the Diaspora” - Wear red, black, and green!
    • Wednesday, February 25th: “I Have a Dream” - Dress in professional attire!
    • Thursday, February 26th: “Black Inventors and Innovators” - Dress like a scientist, doctor, or other STEM-related profession to celebrate Black pioneers in these fields!
    • Friday, February 27th: “Ligon Pride” - Wear your Ligon gear to celebrate our rich history and origin as Raleigh’s Black high school!

We’ll also host an African American Cultural Night event (open to the community) on Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 PM and have a Pep Rally during the school day on Friday. Because of Friday’s Pep Rally, we’ll follow an alternate bell schedule, and student check-out will end at 12:40 PM. Please arrive by then if your student(s) need to be picked up early.

    Student Walkout

Earlier this week, we were made aware of an online petition—started by two Ligon students—for an anti-ICE walkout on Monday, February 23rd at an unspecified time. The petition has circulated amongst, and has since been “signed,” by many other students. While the school does not officially endorse or condemn particular topics of activism, it is our responsibility to ensure students’ safety through logistical coordination. In this case, administration was not able to coordinate in time for students’ proposed walkout. So, please inform your student(s) that they are not to walk out at any time on Monday.

    National Junior Honor Society

Current 6th and 7th grade students who are interested in joining NJHS for the 2026-27 school year should submit an application by March 4th

Current NJHS members do not need to reapply. Please reach out to Ms. Douglas (pdouglas@wcpss.net) for additional information.

PTA Position Statement Regarding School Renovation

As you know, the Wake County Board of Education is weighing three options for our school’s upcoming renovation. Earlier this week, the Ligon PTA Board endorsed “Option 3” in its official position statement, which then received a “show of support” from general membership. The PTA also invites you to share your input regarding the renovation by emailing your school board member or signing up to speak at the March 3rd school board meeting.

    Book Fair Recap

We sold over $8,000 worth of merchandise, gave free books to over 100 students, and had 2,754 student visits to the library for last week’s book fair! We also provided $1,000 worth of books to our school social worker, Ms. Pellas, for students in need and added roughly $3,000 of books to the library’s collection! Special thanks to Ligon PTA parent Mrs. Zimmerman for spearheading the event, Ligon librarian Ms. Jensen for her efforts in making it a success, and to our volunteers and donors for their support!

Share Your Input on Dual Language Immersion Programs

Our school has been selected through a random sampling process to participate in a district-wide community listening effort about Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. WCPSS’s current DLI programs have shown strong outcomes for participating students and families, allowing students to develop strong academic skills while becoming multilingual and multicultural learners. As our community continues to grow and change, the district is gathering feedback to better understand interests, perspectives, and needs related to these programs. Share your input via this 2-5 minute survey by March 18th

    2026-27 Course Registration

Over the next few weeks, our school counselors will continue to visit students’ Social Studies and Science classes to share information about course registration for the 2026-27 school year. Current 8th grade students will learn about high school registration, while current 6th and 7th graders will learn about the next year’s elective course offerings at Ligon. Additional information for 6th and 7th graders is available here. Families should also save the date for our Elective Fair on March 5th, from 5:30-7:30 PM.

    Spring Sports Tryouts

Tryouts for Ligon's Boys’ Soccer, Softball, and Track & Field teams will be held Monday, February 23rd through Friday, February 27th. As a reminder, only 7th and 8th grade students are eligible to participate. Students must complete this Google Form, meet eligibility requirements, have a current physical on file, and be cleared in DragonFly prior to February 23rd. Visit the Ligon Athletics website for more information. Questions? Contact Mr. Medinas, Athletic Director, at wmedinas@wcpss.net.

We enjoyed kicking off our Black History Month celebrations and – courtesy of the PTA and United Arts Council – all students attended a performance by the African American Dance Ensemble today! Fun fact: AADE was founded by Chuck Davis, dancer and choreographer, who was an alum of… John W. Ligon High School!

Posted by Darren Williams on 1/23/2026

    Happy Friday, Ligon Families:

First and foremost, thank you for your support throughout the day on Tuesday! I am incredibly proud of the way our students and staff navigated such a challenging day. As several families have asked, please know that the decision not to communicate additional details about the threat was made in collaboration with the district’s communications and security departments — we wanted to prevent "copycats" and to avoid sharing too much insight into how the school system and law enforcement respond to emergencies. I understand that this conflicts with our need to be informed as parents. While this remains an active investigation, we are confident it was a hoax. We have also learned that similar threats were made to other schools across the state throughout the week.

As a reminder, school will be closed for students on Monday, January 26th. Students should also be prepared to engage with remote learning activities if the impending weather prevents us from being at school on Tuesday. Tuesday is also the first day of Quarter 3/second semester.

    Enjoy your weekend,

    Dr. Williams

    Welcome, Ms. Yearick!

On Tuesday, the WCPSS Board of Education approved Ms. Kendra Yearick's appointment as the newest Assistant Principal at Ligon! Ms. Yearick completed her administrative internship at Dillard Drive Magnet Middle after teaching for 10+ years at Fuquay-Varina High. Her first day will be Monday, January 26th. Welcome, Ms. Yearick!

    Revised Administrator Responsibilities

Several administrative responsibilities will shift when Ms. Yearick joins us on Monday. Notably, Ms. Liggett will transition to supporting 8th grade and Mr. Glasgow will transition to supporting 7th grade. Ms. Yearick will serve as our 6th grade Assistant Principal. This marks the beginning of “looping” at Ligon. If you’re unfamiliar, looping refers to school staff “moving up” with students at the end of each school year. Looking ahead to the 2026-27 school year, Ms. Yearick will move up to 7th grade with our current 6th graders and Mr. Glasgow will move up to 8th grade with our current 7th graders. Our counselors’ grade level assignments will not change this school year:

    • 6th Grade AP: Ms. Yearick; 6th Grade Counselor: Ms. Douglas
    • 7th Grade AP: Mr. Glasgow; 7th Grade Counselor: Ms. Treleven
    • 8th Grade AP: Ms. Liggett; 8th Grade Counselor: Ms. Weaver

The full breakdown of our revised areas of responsibility can be found here.

    Preparing for Remote Learning Days

Please be prepared for the possibility of WCPSS calling for “remote learning days” due to inclement weather next week. Students should mark their attendance and access assignments via Canvas. No new content will be covered and no live (synchronous) instruction will occur. Assignments and activities will be designed to reinforce previously taught material through remediation, practice, or enrichment.

    Upcoming Emergency Drills

In light of Tuesday’s evacuation, please know that we are scheduled to have both a fire drill and our annual lockdown drill within the next two weeks. Please talk with your student(s) to help prevent unnecessary fear or anxiety when these drills are conducted.

    MOY STAR Assessments

Students will take their middle-of-the-year STAR Math & Reading assessments on Thursday, January 29th and Friday, January 30th. As a reminder, these are ungraded diagnostic assessments used to help inform classroom instruction and identify students who need additional support. Please remind your student(s) of the importance of trying their best on these assessments! Questions about STAR assessments should be directed to our Testing Coordinator, Ms. Dawson, at cdawson2@wcpss.net

    Headphones and Personal Device Policy

We have noticed that many of our Little Blues were gifted headphones over the holidays. Please be reminded, however, that wireless headphones (e.g., AirPods, Beats by Dre) are not allowed per the WCPSS personal device policy. Like cell phones, wireless headphones must be turned off and kept in students’ backpacks during the school day. Wired headphones are permitted for use with students’ Chromebooks during class.

    Food Ark Volunteers Needed

The Ligon Food Ark is a resource for all students at Ligon who might need additional food, toiletries, and/or household items. The PTA, in partnership with our school social worker, Ms. Pellas, work together to assemble grocery orders each Friday for students to have over the weekend. We are looking for additional volunteers to help us continue to provide this essential service. We will have an in-person volunteer training session on Wednesday, January 14th from 7:45 -8:45 AM. Please note that you must be an approved WCPSS volunteer and attend this training before beginning to volunteer.

    Assistant Principal Vacancy

Just before winter break, the WCPSS Board of Education approved Mr. McRae’s transfer to Enloe HS as an Assistant Principal. We are thrilled that his new role, which he started today, will allow him to reconnect with former Ligon students and to support many of our current students again when they matriculate to high school.

Our search for a new Assistant Principal is already underway; however, questions and concerns previously shared with Mr. McRae should be directed to me until a hire is made.

    Remote Learning Plans

A few months ago, WCPSS adopted a new remote learning policy for weather-related and emergency school closures. The policy, which grants the Superintendent authority to declare a limited number of remote learning days, will allow learning to continue without needing to add make-up days to the school calendar. This approach helps reduce disruptions to family schedules, keeps students connected to learning during unexpected closures, and aligns WCPSS with neighboring school districts using similar practices.

Moving forward, if WCPSS calls for a remote learning day, students will access asynchronous assignments via Canvas. No new content will be covered and no live (synchronous) instruction will occur. Assignments and activities will be designed to reinforce previously taught material through remediation, practice, or enrichment. In the coming weeks, our teachers will talk with students in greater detail about what to expect if/when a remote learning day occurs.

    Student Checkout Reminders

As we head into the new calendar year, please be reminded that daily student checkout stops at 1:50 PM. After that, you will need to wait for all students to be dismissed at 2:20 PM. Additionally, please remember that a valid form of identification (driver’s license) must be presented if you are picking up your student early.

    Ligon: Let’s Talk

When I transitioned to Ligon last summer, I hosted several “Ligon: Let’s Talk” sessions to introduce myself and hear your thoughts on ways to improve our school. These sessions will soon resume with a continued focus on receiving your feedback, answering your questions, and collectively brainstorming. Some sessions will focus on particular topics, while others will be organic in nature. Other administrators and select school staff will join me in hosting these sessions. Both current and future Ligon families are welcome. Click here to RSVP for our next “Let’s Talk” session on Wednesday, January 28th, at either 7:45 AM or 5:30 PM.
