EOY STAR Assessments
Students will take their end-of-the-year STAR Math & Reading assessments on Thursday, May 7th and Friday, May 8th. As a reminder, these are ungraded diagnostic assessments used to help inform classroom instruction and identify students who need additional support. Please ensure your student(s) arrive at school on-time, and remind them of the importance of doing their best! Questions about STAR assessments should be directed to our Testing Coordinator, Ms. Dawson, at cdawson2@wcpss.net.
PTA General Membership Meeting
In an effort to better accommodate families’ schedules, our next PTA general membership meeting will be held via Google Meet on Monday, May 11th, at 7:30 PM. The meeting agenda includes approval of an interim budget, end-of-year committee updates, and the election of the 2026-27 board candidates:
- President: Kelly Wood
- Vice President: Jemilia Davis
- Treasurer: Adrian Standish
- Secretary: Stephanie Bradley
We need a quorum to pass our budgets and elect our new board, so we highly encourage all current PTA members to log on and participate!
Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week is next week (May 4th–8th), and the Ligon PTA is finalizing its plans for a week filled with fun and meaningful expressions of gratitude!
Click here to cover the cost of a teacher take-home meal ($40.00/meal). You can also contribute to our Teacher Appreciation celebrations by purchasing items from the PTA’s Amazon wishlist. Lastly, if you’re interested in volunteering your time or otherwise contributing to Teacher Appreciation Week, please email Sarah Baum at sarah.eaker@gmail.com. We truly appreciate your support!
8th Grade End-of-Year Events
It’s time to start planning the grand finale for our 8th graders! To celebrate their hard work and send them off to high school in style, the PTA is organizing two major end-of-year events: the 8th Grade Dance (May 29th) and the 8th Grade Picnic (June 9th).- 8th Grade Event Fee. To cover the costs of entertainment, food, and decorations for both events, we are requesting that each 8th grade family pay a $40.00 event fee. Click here to submit payment. If you are able, you can also “sponsor a student” to cover the costs for another 8th grade student.
- Join the Planning Committee! We want to make these celebrations unforgettable, and we need a small team to help steer the ship. If you have a creative eye for decor and want to help brainstorm decorations, or if you are highly organized and willing to be the point person in charge on the day of the dance, we need you! Please email Heather Garner, PTA President, at ligonptapres@gmail.com if you are interested in joining the planning committee.
- Volunteer Opportunities (Calling all 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Parents). If joining a committee doesn't fit your schedule, we still need your help to pull off these events! We have plenty of day-of volunteer slots available to help decorate the morning of the dance, serve food & drinks during the dance, volunteer that evening, and pass out food and run games at the picnic.
- 6th and 7th Grade Parents. We especially need your help! Stepping up to volunteer is a wonderful way to “pay it forward” so that our 8th-grade parents can relax and enjoy these final middle school milestones. Plus, it gives you a sneak peek into what to expect when your student reaches 8th grade! Click here to select a volunteer slot that works best for you.
Spring Congratulatory Bouquets
Celebrate spring arts performances, showcases, and 8th grade promotion ceremony with a congratulatory bouquet from the Ligon Arts Boosters (LAB)! Bouquets are just $20.00, available for pre-order now, and will be ready for pickup in the auditorium lobby before each event. Click here to select your event(s) and order. LAB will handle the rest, so you can sit back and relax during this very busy, but exciting, time of year!Panorama Survey
Your voice is important! Share your feedback about your experience at Ligon by completing the district’s annual Panorama Survey. This brief, anonymous survey helps us to continue strengthening school-to-family partnership. The survey closes on Friday, May 15th.

Schoolwide Behavior Reset
Your child may have shared that administration reset schoolwide behavioral expectations yesterday during lunch. We talked with all students about cafeteria behavior, getting to class on time/going directly to class during transitions, staying in class, keeping their hands to themselves, and adhering to the personal device policy. Thank you in advance for continuing this conversation at home.

2026-27 Elective Registration
2026-27 course registration has been “turned on” in Infinite Campus for current 6th and 7th grade students (and current 5th graders assigned to Ligon for next school year). Your child will see a blue registration banner on their Infinite Campus homepage through Friday, March 20th, but they should not enter/edit their requests outside of when our school counselors visit their Social Studies class. Current 5th graders will enter their requests with their elementary school counselor.
After your child enters their 20 elective requests (16 primary and four alternate), the progress bar will suggest their registration is incomplete. This is correct. Students are only registering for electives and, once administration loads their core classes (ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies), the progress bar will reach 100%. Please ensure your child does not enter requests beyond the 20 marked on their registration worksheet. Entering additional requests will decrease their odds of receiving the courses they are most interested in.
Also, students will not register for audition and application courses in Infinite Campus. These requests will be added manually after placements have been determined.
Additional information about course registration for students returning to Ligon next school year is available here.
Spring Picture Day
Spring Picture Day is Wednesday, March 25th. Click here to place an order online. Your child can also bring their completed Picture Day flyer (passed out today in 4B) with cash or check. Only students that pre-order online or bring cash/check will be photographed. Additional orders will not be accepted after March 25th.

Renovation Update
Renovation "option three," to construct a new building on the current athletic fields, was unanimously approved at Tuesday’s school board meeting. With this option, we will remain in our current building until a new school is built. Then, once we move into the new school, the current building will be torn down, and athletic fields will take its place. We will continue to keep you updated as the project progresses.Communication Expectations
Earlier this week, our staff spent time discussing schoolwide expectations for communicating with families. Our conversation reiterated the importance of timely, professional, and solution-oriented communication. More specifically, we set the expectation of responding to families within two days of receiving a message. Lastly, we clarified procedures for scheduling parent-teacher conferences:- Families may request individual conferences by contacting teachers directly.
- If requesting a conference with multiple teachers, contact the grade level counselor.
- Depending on the conference’s purpose, other staff members may be invited to attend (e.g., instructional facilitator, school counselor). Families will be notified ahead of time if additional staff will be present.
- All conferences will be scheduled within two weeks of the family’s initial request.
- Conferences will be scheduled for 30-45 minutes during teachers’ planning periods, before school (before 7:05 AM), or after school (after 2:45 PM).
- Families will be offered the choice to meet in-person or virtually.
If we are not meeting these expectations, please let me know.
2026-27 Course Registration
Next week, our school counselors will return to 6th and 7th grade Social Studies classes to have students enter their elective course requests in Infinite Campus. If you haven’t already done so, please review your child’s registration worksheet to make sure you agree with their requests. Please do not make additional changes once your child has entered their requests in Infinite Campus. You can find more information about course registration here. Most 8th grade students completed high school registration this week during their Science class. Students who were absent will be pulled out of class next week to complete this. If a change needs to be made to your child’s course requests, complete this Google Form. All changes must be requested by March 13th. After this date, any changes will need to be communicated to the high school the student will be attending. Additional high school registration information can be found on your child’s Science Canvas page.
Update to Student Device Internet Access
Beginning March 16th, students may notice changes to how websites and online content work on their school-issued devices. WCPSS is making these updates as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen online safety and ensure digital resources align with instructional and age-appropriate expectations. As a result, some websites that were previously accessible will be limited. These updates are district-wide and will continue to be reviewed and adjusted as needed. If a website required for instruction is blocked or if a student encounters content that seems inappropriate, families are encouraged to contact their school, so the issue can be reviewed. Thank you for your partnership as we work together to support safe and responsible technology use.

Posted by Darren Williams on 2/20/2026Happy Friday, Ligon Families:
This week’s warmer weather corresponded with an increase in horseplay and general rambunctiousness. And, while there’s plenty of room for “fun” at school, we need your help in reminding students to follow teachers’ expectations and school-wide rules.
Please see below for additional announcements and reminders for this week.
Enjoy your weekend,Dr. Williams

Because of Friday’s Pep Rally, we’ll follow an alternate bell schedule, and student check-out will end at 12:40 PM. Please arrive by then if your student(s) need to be picked up early.
Student Walkout
Earlier this week, we were made aware of an online petition—started by two Ligon students—for an anti-ICE walkout on Monday, February 23rd at an unspecified time. The petition has circulated amongst, and has since been “signed,” by many other students. While the school does not officially endorse or condemn particular topics of activism, it is our responsibility to ensure students’ safety through logistical coordination. In this case, administration was not able to coordinate in time for students’ proposed walkout. So, please inform your student(s) that they are not to walk out at any time on Monday.

PTA Position Statement Regarding School Renovation
As you know, the Wake County Board of Education is weighing three options for our school’s upcoming renovation. Earlier this week, the Ligon PTA Board endorsed “Option 3” in its official position statement, which then received a “show of support” from general membership. The PTA also invites you to share your input regarding the renovation by emailing your school board member or signing up to speak at the March 3rd school board meeting.Book Fair Recap
We sold over $8,000 worth of merchandise, gave free books to over 100 students, and had 2,754 student visits to the library for last week’s book fair! We also provided $1,000 worth of books to our school social worker, Ms. Pellas, for students in need and added roughly $3,000 of books to the library’s collection! Special thanks to Ligon PTA parent Mrs. Zimmerman for spearheading the event, Ligon librarian Ms. Jensen for her efforts in making it a success, and to our volunteers and donors for their support!Share Your Input on Dual Language Immersion Programs
Our school has been selected through a random sampling process to participate in a district-wide community listening effort about Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. WCPSS’s current DLI programs have shown strong outcomes for participating students and families, allowing students to develop strong academic skills while becoming multilingual and multicultural learners. As our community continues to grow and change, the district is gathering feedback to better understand interests, perspectives, and needs related to these programs. Share your input via this 2-5 minute survey by March 18th.2026-27 Course Registration
Over the next few weeks, our school counselors will continue to visit students’ Social Studies and Science classes to share information about course registration for the 2026-27 school year. Current 8th grade students will learn about high school registration, while current 6th and 7th graders will learn about the next year’s elective course offerings at Ligon. Additional information for 6th and 7th graders is available here. Families should also save the date for our Elective Fair on March 5th, from 5:30-7:30 PM.Spring Sports Tryouts
Tryouts for Ligon's Boys’ Soccer, Softball, and Track & Field teams will be held Monday, February 23rd through Friday, February 27th. As a reminder, only 7th and 8th grade students are eligible to participate. Students must complete this Google Form, meet eligibility requirements, have a current physical on file, and be cleared in DragonFly prior to February 23rd.
