Homework
The following are school-wide expectations for homework:
It is the Wake County Public Schools and Forest Pines policy that homework is optional, and therefore can and may vary at individual teachers’ discretion - in terms of both the frequency of required homework assignments and nightly time limits listed below are the maximum time students should spend on homework with no minimum requirement applied. Parents are encouraged to reach out to the individual teacher if their child is spending more than the maximum amount of time on homework as outlined below.
· Kindergarten: 10 - 20 minutes daily
· First Grade: 20 minutes daily
· Second Grade: 20 minutes daily
· Third Grade: 30 minutes daily
· Fourth Grade: 30 minutes daily
· Fifth Grade: 30 minutes daily
*Students may also be assigned up to 20 minutes of reading time nightly which could be in addition to the maximum time limits outlined above.
The following are grade/subject specific expectations for the completion and grading of homework:
The school’s Homework Plan can be found in the principal's office and on the school’s website.
Classwork & Assessments
The following are school-wide expectations for classwork and assessments: Students in kindergarten through the fifth grade are expected to complete daily and weekly classwork in the specified time frame designated by the classroom teacher. Any adjustments in due dates and completion times will be made based on individual student needs and at the classroom teacher’s discretion.
Students in need of intervention/remediation will be provided with additional focused instruction and opportunities to demonstrate learning. This additional opportunity will be graded and may replace a previous grade if the student was able to demonstrate marked improvement. Teachers have the discretion to provide students with the opportunity to be reassessed in an effort to gather the most accurate measure of student learning.
Missed Work
The following are school-wide expectations for missed work: In the case of excused absences, short-term out-of-school suspensions, and absences under G.S. 130A-440 (for failure to submit a school health assessment form within 30 days of entering school), the student will be permitted to make up his or her missed work. Assignments missed due to participation in school-related activities are also eligible for makeup by the student. If the absence is approved in advance and/or if the work is assigned by the teacher in advance, all make-up work, including tests assigned for the day of return, is due upon the student's return to school. Teachers should use discretion and may make exceptions in the case of students whose excused absences were not planned in advance, were beyond the student's control, and the nature of which would not support make-up work the day of return. If the make-up work has not been assigned in advance, for absences of one (1) to three (3) days, the student will have one day for each day absent. For absences exceeding three (3) days, the student may have two (2) days for each day absent to make up work. Special consideration will be given in the case of extended absences due to injury or chronic illness.
