Frequently Asked Questions
Please see the information below to answer any questions you may have about the FVHS Technology Academy. If you have more questions or would like to schedule a meeting to discuss the Academy, please reach out directly!
- Is there a cost to join the program?
- NO. The Technology Academy is a FREE opportunity that offers many unique experiences tailored to student interests in the technology field
- Is this program part of the regularly scheduled school day?
- YES. Students will take regular CTE electives during their school day, along with carefully curated core subject courses throughout their four years of high school at FVHS. They will still have choices each year for electives and other core classes. The Academy classes are designed to be co-curricular, where students work on projects in more than one subject to build connections and creativity.
- Are there any specific requirements to join the FVHS Technology Academy?
- NO. Any Wake County rising 9th grader is eligible to apply for the Academy.
- What if my child doesn't really care about technology?
- THAT'S OKAY! Technology is all around us. EVERY student can benefit from the skills, credentials, and industry experiences students receive through the FVHS Technology Academy. They have a choice between 2 tracks of study and will still have other "free" spots in their schedule to choose from.
- What if my child wants to take AP or CCP classes? What if they are in sports, band, or other programs?
- THAT'S GREAT! CCP courses and AP courses are all perfectly fine to do alongside the Academy program requirements. Band, sports, the Arts, clubs, etc. are all welcome. We are proud to work with students who are driven and have many interests.
- What makes the Academy special? Can't my child just take those classes anyway?
- GREAT QUESTION. The Academy offers some courses that are specific to the Academy, so other students won't be able to take those electives. The Academy also offers experiences to students that traditional students would not have, including guest speakers, lunch and learns, field trips, job shadowing, volunteering, and internship opportunities. Students will have a wide network of connections once they leave the Academy, and will have confidence to move forward in college or career.
- What classes does my student have to take in the Academy?
- CLICK HERE for the list of courses in the Academy Course of Study for both the Computer Science and Adobe Video Design tracks.
- Can a student leave the Academy if it is no longer a good fit for them?
- YES. While we do require a full 4-year commitment at the time of applying, our intent is to grow and enrich students who want to take advantage of what the Academy has to offer. If a student decides they would like to leave the Academy roster, we will meet to discuss those options.
- For opportunities outside of school, do students have to pay or find transportation, etc.?
- NO. Students are covered under the CTE office in the WCPSS district office. We strive to provide equitable opportunities for ALL students. Transportation will generally be provided, but students are also welcome to drive themselves or others with proper documentation. The only cost students might incur for these opportunities would be lunch or snack money. Other opportunities may be provided that are not connected to FVHS specifically, but would require the student/their family to attend on their own. Those costs would be individually financed.
