Magnet schools in the Wake County Public School System serve as national examples of high standards. In 2023, Magnet Schools of America awarded several WCPSS schools, including Poe, with Magnet Schools of Merit Awards.  These awards recognize member magnet schools/programs that demonstrate a high commitment to academic standards, curriculum innovation, desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staff and parent and community involvement.  The Magnet School of Excellence is the highest award of recognition.
