Exploring Calendar Changes to Meet Growth and Capacity Needs
Our district is evaluating ways to balance enrollment across schools to ensure all students have access to high-quality learning environments. The capacity at some of our multi-track year-round schools is underutilized, while some traditional-calendar schools are experiencing significant overcrowding due to growth.
To address school crowding and growth, we have implemented measures such as 'capping' enrollment and reassigning students to less crowded schools. While these strategies provide temporary relief, they also create uncertainty for families and place additional strain on our transportation system. At the same time, some multi-track year-round schools are not full, leading to underutilized facilities.
Recognizing the need for a more sustainable, long-term solution that balances school capacity while minimizing disruptions for families, we are exploring adjustments to school calendars. One approach is to convert multi-track year-round schools that are not full to a traditional calendar, and adjust some overcrowded traditional schools to a multi-track year-round model to create additional capacity.
In addition, recent feedback from families in our district indicates that changing the calendar of a school may be preferable to being reassigned to a different school.
Lake Myra Elementary Calendar Conversion
On April 8, staff recommended the Board convert Lake Myra Elementary to a multi-track year-round calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. Converting Lake Myra Elementary to a multi-track year-round calendar will allow for the school system to utilize the additional capacity to accommodate the projected growth in the area. By operating on a multi-track year-round calendar, the school capacity will increase from 616 to 814. Watch the presentation on YouTube. Please share your thoughts and feedback via ThoughtExchange until April 18.
Virtual Information Session
A virtual information session will be held on May 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. to discuss Lake Myra Elementary's calendar. Join via Google Meet.

2025-26 Calendar Conversion for Pine Hollow Middle and Rolesville Middle
Background
In 2024, staff sought public input on converting Pine Hollow Middle and Rolesville Middle to either a Track 4 only or a Traditional calendar. Based on forecasted information, the projected growth is not expected to exceed the available seats at many schools in the area. Due to K-3 class size legislation, additional seats provided by multi-track year-round schools are still needed at the elementary level.
