Monthly Updates- May 2026

  • Phonemic Awareness/Heggerty:  In weeks 7-9, students will blend four phonemes with blends, isolate final phonemes including consonants and digraphs, and segment words into four phonemes. Students will add, delete, and substitute initial phonemes with mixed rimes. They will develop alphabet knowledge of L blends, S blends, L&S blends, and connect phonemes to graphemes.

Word Recognition/Letterland: Most WCPSS classrooms might complete their learning with Section 4: Consonant Blends. Should pacing allow, teachers are encouraged to begin instructing from Section 5: The Vowel Men and Magic e. Note that while open syllable words are included in kindergarten standards, magic e (or VCE) words are included in grade 1 standards. In Section 5 students will read short words with a single vowel in the final position (open syllables) and will spell CVC and VCE words correctly. They will be introduced to 3 more high frequency words.

Language Comprehension/Close Reading Lessons:  Students will engage in learning and discussion through interactive read-aloud and integrated speaking/language/writing experiences to build knowledge and vocabulary around the characteristics of animals and their habitats.

Writing: Students and teachers will be engaged in the Launch, Explore, Land explicit teaching framework with a focus in both foundational and composition lessons. Students continue practicing letter formation and expressing their thoughts through drawing and dictation.
