Honor Societies at Sanderson High School represent national organizations and require students to demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership and service in their respective fields. These specific organizations have various requirements for admittance.

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to recognize those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Juniors and seniors with a 3.5 unweighted GPA are invited to apply. On the application, students will provide information about their community service and leadership roles. The faculty committee that reviews these applications looks for leadership here at Sanderson High School. Student council, team captain, line or section leader in band or choir are examples of leadership roles. Essentially, students must show that they have been responsible for planning and organizing some activities and directing the work of others in that activity.The committee will also look for an enduring commitment to community service. This may be something to consider over the summer! A single episode or once-yearly project typically does not satisfy this requirement. Ongoing service is the standard.

The committee will also take into consideration teacher recommendations as part of the selection process. If the committee approves a student's application and the student receives consistently high ratings from their teachers, he/she will have met the final criteria for membership and will be notified of their acceptance via email.

In 1978, the National Art Education Association began the NAHS program to inspire and recognize students who have shown an outstanding ability and interest in art. The program supports members in their efforts to attain the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service, and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.

NAHS is for A/B academic students with a focus on promoting arts in the community. Art club meets with NAHS and is open to freshmen and sophomores with an interest in art.

Requirements to join: A/B average GPA, teacher recommendation, service hours and art show requirements. NAHS must have completed at least one visual art course at SHS with A/ B average.

Students will meet bi-weekly in room 106 from 2:30-3:30 pm.

The National Technical Honor Society currently serves approximately 100,000 active members and nearly a million members since its creation in 1984. NTHS strives to bring well deserved recognition, scholarship opportunities, and career opportunities to students who excel in one of the 108 career and technical educational fields as their profession. Not only do NTHS students embody all the attributes and talent which are in demand today, these students also embrace a clear vision for tomorrow’s workforce and their role in it.  

The National Technical Honor Society is an educational non-profit that exists to honor, recognize, and empower students and teachers in Career & Technical Education.
NTHS helps members:

Requirements to join:

• Maintained a B average in their CTE courses
• Unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Complete courses in a CTE PATHWAY
• Disciplinary record / Attendance in good standing
• Career Technical Student Organization member such as TSA, DECA, FCCLA (or involved in any school-aged group where the student deals with technology)
• 10 hours of service work with that group per semester
• Mostly juniors and seniors, but there are some sophomores that could apply during the spring semester if they completed a course pathway in the fall.
