Community Resources for Parents and Families

A variety of community services are available to provide parents and families of students in the school system with needed information, support, and resources. Families are encouraged to utilize applicable community services. A list of community services available to parents and families is available below:

Health and Wellness Supports for Students and Families
In addition to the many services and supports that our schools offer with the help of school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and other specialists, this resource may provide additional help to students and families to improve their health and wellness.

Special Education Resources
We provide special education and related services according to the federal mandates of the Individual with Disabilities Act and the regulations of the North Carolina Public School Law, Article 9. This website provides useful resources and community partner links.

Wake County’s Health & Human Services department helps people with basic needs.

Wake Local Interagency Coordinating Council - Coming Together
A collaborative partnership among families, caregivers and professionals to promote a coordinated and effective Early Intervention System in Wake County.

Disability Rights North Carolina
This federally mandated protection and advocacy system ensures the rights of all state citizens with disabilities through individual advocacy and system change.

Social Security Administration
Provides monthly financial support for low income families with disabled children under Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Community Alternatives Program for Children (CAP-C)
The Community Alternatives Program for Children (CAP/C) is a federally funded program for children who are "medically fragile" and benefit from nursing care in the home.

First in Families of North Carolina - Wake County
Support to individuals with disabilities and their families according to self-defined needs. Examples: home furnishings or modifications, equipment, childcare or respite, or minor repairs to vehicles.

Made4Me
Non-profit organization that works with families and schools to create personalized adaptations of furniture and accessories for individuals with special medical needs free of charge.

United Healthcare Children’s Foundation
Provides income based financial grants for children under age 16 to enhance the child’s quality of life and support medical needs not covered by insurance. Note: The family does NOT have to have this insurance plan to qualify.

North Carolina Health Insurance Premium Payment Program
Insurance: Children with developmental delays may qualify for ABD (Aged Blind Disabled) Medicaid if they cannot qualify for regular income-based children’s Medicaid. Same application as regular Medicaid for children. Medicaid can also be a secondary insurance, paying after private insurance. If a child has ABD Medicaid as a SECONDARY insurance, the family may qualify for the NCHIPP Program (North Carolina Health Insurance Premium Payment Program).

Work with a Childcare Search Specialist to do an individualized search for programs meeting your specific criteria.

Project Enlightenment
Early childhood education and prevention program offering a Resource Center for parents and teachers, Triple P Parenting Support, Parents as Teachers program, developmental screenings, behavioral consultation for teachers, parent consultation services, etc.

Children’s Developmental Services Agency (CDSA) of Wake County
Developmental assessments of children ages birth through 3 years old. If the child is determined to be eligible, services will be provided by the agency in the child’s home.
