Courses

At Enloe, courses range from Russian 1 to Russian 4, so newcomers as well as those experienced in Russian have an equal chance to learn. In addition to learning to read, write, and speak Russian, students learn the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, watch videos in Russian, learn about life in Russia, and, on occasion, eat Russian food. Russian classes are fairly small, and there is a great deal of one-on-one instruction.

Russian I

Students learn fundamentals of the language. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills are all emphasized and integrated with the goals of confidence and early redimentary fluency. Students will begin keyboarding employing the Soviet-style keyboard layout. Russnet computerized language modules will also be used.

Russian II

This course continues to build upon the knowledge gained in Russian I as assignments become increasingly challenging and students become more confident in communication. Independence is fostered through a shift to student presentations in the target language. Russnet computerized modules will also be used.

Russian III (H)

Continuing the systematic study of the language begun in earlier levels, students should complete basic grammar and begin advanced grammar concepts beyond the six cases, verb conjugation, and sentence formation. Writing assignments will likely include paragraph-length responses to literature, and by year’s end, students should be prepared to begin reading lengthy, and at times, undiluted Russian passages including short stories. Russnet computerized modules will also be used.

Russian IV (H)

This course will offer an increased competency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing the language. Discussions, debates, and conversation will be enhanced by the readings of selected novels, short stories, essays, drama, poetry, newspapers, and magazines. Russnet computerized modules will also be used.

IB Language B: Russian HL (Russian V, Russian VI, Russian VII)

This course will offer an increased competency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing the language. Writing prompts will incorporate student production of IB text types in response to IB Core Topics and IB Optional Topics. A variety of media will be sued to develope student comprehension, ranging from novels and non-fiction readings, to news broadcasts, cinema and news articles.
