    History of Hilburn

The Hilburn Drive Elementary School complex opened in 1994 and was first used for one year by Jeffrey’s Grove Elementary School to house their students while reconstruction was taking place on their campus. The next year, in 1995, due to overcrowding at Leesville Road Elementary School, the Kindergarten through Third Grade student population was moved from Leesville Road Elementary to Hilburn, and Hilburn Drive Elementary School was established as Kindergarten through Third grade school. The fourth and fifth graders remained at Leesville. During the 1999-2000 school year, Hilburn was converted into a Kindergarten through fifth grade school and was assigned its own student base population. With 33 K-5 homeroom classrooms and almost 800 students in the 2006-07 school year, Hilburn continued to grow with our community. We grew to 875 students in 2007-2008. During that year, Hilburn was greatly affected by the district’s student reassignment plan due to the opening of nearby Sycamore Creek Year-Round Elementary. Many Hilburn families were assigned to Sycamore Creek, and students from several other neighboring schools were assigned to Hilburn to fill their vacated seats. During the 2008-2009 school year, Hilburn served around 535 students – making us a smaller, more intimate school community. For the first time in its history, Hilburn served many of the neighborhoods immediately surrounding the campus.
