Parents' RightsThe special education process is a partnership between families and the Wake County Public School System. We are committed to working together to support your child’s success.
Understanding your rights
As a parent or guardian of a child with a disability, you have important rights. These rights are described in the Parents Rights and Responsibilities in Special Education handbook, published by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction's Office of Exceptional Children. This handbook explains the legal protections provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Bringing a representativeWe believe that working together helps us make the best decisions about your child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). You may choose to bring an advocate or attorney to IEP meetings.
Read the district guidelines for having a representative at meetings.
